polishing inlet manifold (upper)

Recommended Posts

ok, firstly thanks for all the great comments on my 12 hours labour :)

i've had some pm's about the process involved so i thought i would do a quick 'how to'

right this is a job if you start then there is NO going back, so take a deep breath before you start!

equipment needed: mouse sander with 80 to 200 grit pads, wet and dry paper 200 to 1200 grit (2000 if you can get it) you will need alot of the finer grade paper, autosol metal polish. (a dremel with 80 grit sanding wheel is a great tool for getting to the awkward parts)

1. cover the engine ( i used a table cloth with a rectangle cut out of the middle the size of the 6 branches) then fix down with some masking tape. i also put a cloth over the alternater just to be on the safe side.

2.start with the 80 grit on the mouse sander till you get a universal surface of scratches then work down to 200, also do the same with the dremel if you have one.

3.now you can start with the wet and dry paper, 200 grit (this will be aggressive enough to remove the rough cast if you don't have a dremel) use plenty of water with the sand paper.then be patient and work your way up to 1200 grit removing the previous scratches untill the scratches are universal to each grade of paper.

4.when you are happy that the scratches are all removed you can start on the autosol polish, keep applying with a soft cloth until you are happy with the finish.

now stand back and marvel at your hard work 8-|

i hope this helps and good luck if you go for it ;)
