spindat45 0
Hi folks. I have a standard '96 Highline which needs lowering. I use the car frequently on motorways but live in a part of London where the council love speed humps. I have been looking on the forum here and also spoken to a few VR owners who have recommended FK Konigsports which are height and dampness adjustable. I have recently had a Weitec set up recommended. They are supposed to be better manufactured than the FK's, less likely to rust, are within my budget but are only height adjustable. Anyboy know how hard the ride is on these? I have no intention of turning my car into a track car. I simply want to stop getting sea sick when I come out of a sharp bend and cut down on the amount of small animals setting up home under my arches. (TT comps waiting to be fitted). I understand that I will lose the smoothe ride I have at the moment. I definatly do not want a really stiff/hard ride with no suspension travel which could lead to serious back trouble in later life. I hope I'm not asking too much of you guys & gals but any advice in this area would be much appreciated. I really want to get this right. Thanks.
matth76 1
Just had a GMAX kit fitted. Must be lowered at least 40mm all round even though it is supposed to lower it 35mm. When you ride a long you cannot tell the difference to stock...it is so smooth and comfortable yet far more control round corners. The improvement to looks is excellent... I can only fit one finger between the rear wheel arch and tyre and two fingers at the front... If you fit a deep front splitter like I have it will look low and aggresive at the front while still having ample height (12 cms ground clearance) to get over speed bumps etc. Total cost £230 inc vat for the kit. Probably £150-£180inc vat for fitting. So you're looking at just a little over £400 in total. If you go to The Phirm who are near Farnham in Surrey they will fit it so it is spot on and the Phirm are one of the best VR specialists in the country on a par with Stealth...so well worth the trip if you can get there. Gmax kits also come with a 3 year guarentee whereas FK only have 1 year. Good luck mate.Cheers,Matt
spindat45 0
Thanks Matt. I can fit them myself so will save a couple hundred there. A lot cheaper than the other set-ups Ive been looking at. I know that coilovers are the better option but I may opt for a normal spring/shock set-up for the time being especially if the ride is not hard. What size wheels and tryes are you running? Any probs with rubbing on the rear arches?
spindat45 0
Another question for you. Does your VR have Air con? Ive heard that the extra weight of the A/C can make a difference when shocks and springs are fitted. Also is it any heavier on the steering?
matth76 1
Hi mate. I don't have air con and have the standard 15" bbs alloys (they are 205 width). No rubbing at all. Can't notice any difference in the steering at all. The extra weight (approx 25kgs) shouldn't make too much of a difference. The gap at the front between the tyre and wheel arch is slightly bigger than the rear...so if anything it will probably just reduce the gap so it is equal (if anything it will only be a 1cm increase compared to a car without A/C). If you have any questions re the GMAX kit The Phirm are very helpful and will answer them. CheersMatt
