Hi All,

I seem to be hitting quite a few problems with my VR recently. Its coming up to 110k but surely I can get a fair bit more out of it??

My latest problem is a little worrying. For the last couple of months my ABS light has been flicking on/off (mostly on though). From reading the forums here I know this is a common issue on the Golf but have not been 'too' worried about it as doesnt it just mean that I have no ABS at the moment? (still needs sorting tho)

Anyway, some mornings I will start the car up and the ABS light will be off. What then happens while driving along (Sometimes) is that I hear a strange rattling/vibrating sound from down behind the dash on the drivers side, so possibly behind the bulkhead. I can only describe the sound as being like a drill going into a wall but quieter! This might happen for a few seconds at a time. I've found that while this rattling is occurring if I attempt to press the break pedal it actually doesn't really press down at all and I can feel the vibration through the pedal. Oh, and the car doesn't break either!

The ABS light will come on at some point. This only seems to happen during the first 5 mins or so of driving the car.

I will have to take it to get sorted out soon as its getting dangerous to drive now, but was wondering if this is something anyone has encountered before?

Thanks for any assistance and sorry for the longish post!

Cheers.

The noise your refering to will be the ABS unit kicking in as its located next to the Brake Master Cylinder on the firewall and thats why you'll feel like you have no brakes.

I'd take it to a garage and get the fault codes read, printed and cleared. Drive it for a week or so then go and have the codes read again. Any that show up again are codes you can work with. It could just be dirty ABS rings that are fooling the ABS unit and thus it kicks in. Or the wires to the ABS sensor are split and condensation is getting on to them and shorting them out thus again making the ABS kick in.

Good luck with getting it fixed! :)

VW can definately do it for sure but it may cost just to have the fault codes read and cleared. Here in Germany they will do it for free!

Most garages should have the diagnostics equipment to be able to do it but have a look through you local yellow pages or something for a VAG specialist in your area, they should hopefully the equipment to do it being a VAG specialist! :D
