matth76 1
HiI have just had a stainless steel Milltek exhaust fitted to my car. Straight away I noticed the welded areas on the backbox are a very dark grey but there is also a brownish colour...very similar to a rust colour! A brand new exhaust can't surely have rust at the seams??? Is this normal and common with all stainless steel exhausts? What is this...is it part of the welding process?CheersMatt

beetle.jim 0
Stainless wont rust but check if it's mig or tig welded. If they use mild steel mig wire to weld the exhaust that can rust. The brown on the edge of the weld is probably just from the heat of welding.

stockers 1
the brown is most likely to be from the heat of the weld burnashing the exhaust slightly, but its tricky to say without seeing a pic of it :|
seadog 0
when u tig weld stainless it disscolours due to the heat, tends to go dark blue-purple looks black in certain light, the only way it could b rusting is if the stainless has been impregnated with mild steel( e.g grinding sparks from mild steel) but then that would take a while to show on the stainless,if u can hold of some scotchbrite(steel wool) u can try cleanin the welds to remove the colour but always rub with the grain or you`ll ruin the finish!! done it many a time at work :?
