In the US, the five door was called the Golf, but from about 1995 all three doors were called GTI's. The GTI came in 2.0 8v (similar to the UK GTI, but with a crossflow head), and as a VR6. The word Golf did not appear on the GTI's.

As to why? Who knows but I suspect it was an attempt to distance the car from the Golf name, after the hideously badly built late 80's and early 90's Golfs when US production first shifted from Westmoreland to Mexico.
