matth76 1
HiIs it normal for the Golf VR6 engine be slightly "ticky" / "raspy" when you let it idle after driving? I think it's the belt going round on the right hand (driver) side. I'm not sure what the belt does but it seems to be where the slight ticking comes from. The engine isn't overly loud and only audiable if you open the window or get out of the car and listen when it's idling. My car is as smooth and quiet when driving though. My car is a 1997 year and has done 71000miles, full service history. Thanks for any info.Matt
olifooks 0
could be the idler pulley on the accesory belt? cheap to change, it's only a bearing sealed in the pulley
matth76 1
Spoke to Vince at Stealth and he said it is probably a small stone stuck in the belt. I'm having the belt replaced. Apparently it deals with the PAS.
antera309 3
The belt wraps around the PAS pump, water pump, alternator & the idler pulley on the tensioner. It also drives the air-con pump on cars that have one. Any of these components can cause excessive noise when they are worn. It's usually the tensioner pulley (maybe because this is the smallest pulley and therefore turns the fastest?).Try a new belt and if that doesn't work, look at the tensioner next.
