VR6OC News Bot 30
Toyota Australia has unveiled a Shooting Brake concept version of the 86 sports car. Developed by Toyota Australia’s Product Design, the concept was hand-built in Japan under the direction of the global sports car division. Unlike some prototypes, the 86 Shooting Brake is a fully functional car, driveable vehicle, which according to Toyota it has been put through its paces on a test track. Toyota Australia’s design chief Nicolas Hogios said his design team has made a bulk of the modifications beyond the B-pillar, where the car gains a longer roof panel, an upswept rear window, and an upright hatch. These modification give the 86 a bigger trunk, frees up more headroom for the rear passengers and it also makes the Shooting Brake one of the breathtaking Toyotas in recent history. The company didn’t provide any drivetrain details, but It doesn’t sound like Toyota has made any mechanical changes, other than the rear roofline. So the Shooting Brake most likely is powered by the same 2.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-four engine used in the coupe. The unit generates 200 hp/149kW and 205 Nm (151 lb-ft) of torque when equipped with a six-speed automatic, and 202 hp, 212 Nm (156 lb-ft) with a manual gearbox configuration. “While we never say never, and I would love this concept to become a production reality, it is very much a concept that demonstrates the passion within Toyota for cars that are fun to drive”, says Tetsuya Tada.
