OBD2 inlet manfiold mod and chip/remap and BBS?? All advice welcome :))

Recommended Posts

Hello every1, just want to get some advice. New to the vr6 scene, got my self a p reg m,3 golf vr6, completely standard. Need a bit of advice on a few issues

1) ive been hearing and reading the threads on the inket manifold and how its restricted, came across a few guides i, e

Interested in this, just wondering if i can do this to my standard obd2 inket manifold? As far as i can see doesnt seem to much trouble. Bit of cutting, grinding and polishing lol was wondering if this is worth doing and what the gains would be? I no it imoroves high end flow to giv a bit more power. Want to keep costs diwn so might have a crack at it myself

2) like most cars cheapest way of more power is chipping! Or remapping lol

Seen these chips on ebay and did a quick search to nothing but bad feedback, wondering if its worth doing for a bit more power. I have emailed jim potter, so just waiting for him to ge back to me. Was wondering what kind of gains and is it worthwhile?

3) was in dire need of a new set of wheels, got some coilovers going on soon, so wanted to upgrade the wheels but still wanted that oem look, so got me a set of bbs anniversary (rx2 i think there called) ive been reading that i may need spacers and some people saying i wnt for brake clearance. Was wondering if ne1 can clear this up and also best tyre size for the vr6 on this wheel bearing in mind ride height will be lowered by bout 30mm ish

All advice welcome, good and bad and any other cheap mods i can carry for a few extra horses will be much appreciated!

What size are the rx2s, if you want to keep the same speedo ratio the tyre size will depend on the wheel size, a rule of thumb is if you up in size 1" you reduce the sidewall by a profile to keep overall rolling circumference about the same ie 205/50/15 , 205/45/16 , 205/40/17

If you have the wheels the best way to see if they will clear is to have a go at fitting them, even if no tyres you'll get a somewhat good idea of the clearances and you'll definitely know if they clear the brakes

The obd2 inlet hack/chop/slice weld mod, or the "Euro 2.9 mod" as it's known in the US seems to crop up on most VW forums - but from everything I've read anyone who's done this (then done a back to back test on the rollers) has found they gain pretty much 0 bhp and can lose torque ; the way the 2.8 one is shaped even though it appears restrictive does give good torque. It may differ if you did this on an OBD1 VR6 (or put a corrado one on an OBD1 Golf) - I guess if you're handy with a drill then you could buy a corrado VR inlet and re-drill it for an OBD2 throttle body (unless its off an obd2 Corrado!) but TBH if you've got OBD2 then you've got the better management setup for power/torque etc so cams / Schrick Inlet Manifold / Turbo / Nitrous are your best bets for power!
