Dragon Dave 1
There is a noise and vibration that sounds like gearbox whine. The car has only just started to do this. I noticed this a couple of days ago and then it got better and now it has come back.It only does it when I'm decelarating. When I take my foot off the accelerator and the car is slowing down on the engine, the whine starts and I can feel the vibrations through the gear stick. It's like a rattly whine that goes along with the revs of the engine or gearbox, I can't tell which one and when I put my foot on the clutch it stops. Also if I touch the accelerator lightly to take the strain of the engine it also stops. It's worse at high speeds, you don't really notice it at low speeds and is worse in 5th gear and doesn't happen in 1st and 2nd but that could be because it's at a lower speed. My guess is that it is the engine or gearbox mounts, is there a way I can check them?Has anybody had this problem before?Any ideas of what I could do to find the problem?Any help on this would be great thanks. filtee 0
Has your car got original airbox or induction kit?
Dragon Dave 1
At the moment I have a K&N air filter, you know the cone type that sucks in all the hot air.I'm going to change it for a BMC CDA very soon
filtee 0
Is the old airbox completely removed? My vr has an induction kit on when i bought it but the previous owner had left the bottom half of the airbox in.Anyway, the reason i'm asking is- i had a very similar problem on my old caddy van. I was thinkin mounts, gearbox etc and it turned out the airbox wasnt fastened in properly. It was slightly loose causing it to vibrate at certain revs/speeds. Is your K&N fastened tight with a tie wrap or loose and able to move? It may be resting on the inner wing possibly????
filtee 0
Also, i think when your mounts are nackered you feel a lot of movement in the engine when you change gear rather than a vibration.
Dragon Dave 1
The air box is completely removed. The K&N air filter is just fixed on to the end of the inlet pipe and the inlet pipe is fixed to a bracket that attaches to the suspension turret. It seems secure and doesn't move much. It doesn't touch anything when I do move it. I don't think it has anything to do with the air filter.I don't feel a lot of movement when I change gear so maybe not the mounts. It only happens when I take my foot off the accelerator and I'm decelerating in gear. I can feel a lot of engine vibration through the gear stick. Thanks for your help
Dragon Dave 1
I took my friend who is a mechanic out for a drive so he could hear and feel the problem. It only happens in fifth gear. Not in any other gear even at the same speeds. We think it is a problem with the 5th gear
