bentheboffin 1
since ive had a lot of questions answered in here i thought id copy my build thread onto hereso here goesthis starts from aug 09i got this car car just over 2yrs ago for £50heres a couple of pics of how it looked when i first got itit was completly standard, just the passenger side windows were all smashed in when the last owner took it of the road due to a blown radiator.i managed to locate the last owner and ask him what he was doing with it and got told he was going to scrap it.so naturally i took it of his hands.so the next day i sourcced and fitted all the windows and a radiator and put it through its mot expecting it to fail and to my surprise it passedi never really planned on doing much to this car aprt fromm keeping it tidy i eventually ended up lowering and putting on my borbet c alloys. i also fitted 16v rear lights and smoked indicatorsthis is how it lookedthen a year ago my head gasket went, instead of replacing it i decided i would buy my mates 1900 grant motorsport lump and fit that. after spending a few weekends giving it a light rebuid and detailing it i found out that i couldnt use it as it was originally running k-jet and the injector ports were the wrong size (didnt realise there were 2 different size injetor ports on kjet engines till then)after this i lost interest in the car untill march this year when i finally decided id do a vr6 conversionspent 2 months watching vr6s on ebay as i was after a bargain. this car is being built on a beer money budgeti eventually won a vr6 for a good price of £420 it had a 2 months mot and a months tax, but it had a possible starter motor fault. this turned out to be a leaking aux water pump shooting water all over the starter and causing it not to workheres the carid driven it around for a month till the tax ran out then just parked it up till i could source the parts for the conversionafter aquiring a 2x 16v exhaust system, a b4 passat pedal box and a solid front engine mountwork eventually started on this last weeki now have most the wiring sorted after ripping out all the old alarm system as it was crudly fitted, just need to run a switch feed for the aux water pump and run a wire from the coil packs and a couple of resistors so i can use my mk2 16v clocks and still retain a rev counterpassat pedal box and vr clutch mater cylinder fittedvr6 subframe fitted and engine mount cut down mk2 wishbones and rack fitted to subframespax psx front struts and spring fittedengine fitted with solid front mount16v hubs and brakes fitted will fit vr6 calipers and disc after ive got the thing runningmk3 gear selector fittedheres a cpl of before and after pics sos about the crappy fone quality never had my digital camera with mething still left to do is tidy up the wiring and plumb in the vr6 radiator and figure out where and how im going to mount the ecu
bentheboffin 1
sep 09progress has been slower than i hoped on this due to the fact ive had no transport and the car being 20miles awaybut anyhow ive had the afternoon on it today and managed to fit the radiator in place and get all the plumb work sorted, next time i do this i think i wont be such a cheap skate and actually buy corrado gear cause it was a pain in the arse trying to get it to fit rightalso manage to get the rest of the front end bolted in place, its actually starting look like im going to finish it soonall ive gotta do now is tidy up all the wiring mount the ecu (where and how do u guys mount yours)fit the exhaust and decatfill it up with fluidsthen try and start the thing plan on getting it ready for the mot next wednesday if i can get the above done in time
bentheboffin 1
march 10havnt updated this in a while so i thought id show u wot im upto now as the car is virtually togetherbasically i brought another mk2 that i'm going to break as i needed a complete working lock set as my drivers door handle is buggered, needed a roof lining as half of mine was missing since i brought it and a few other bits and pieces like central locking pump etcso here we go a few shots of my mk2 vr and the car i'm going to break
bentheboffin 1
may 10now slight change of plan with as im going 2motion now, this is due to the head gasket going and didnt wanna mess around witha an egine that alraedy had 130k, needed new chains and just wasnt quite enough power for me, plus i picked up the engine at too good a price to refuse lol heres the money shotscause i'm a tight barsteward and hate parting with cash for other people to do work on my i decided last nite that i definatly wasnt going to pay anybody to convert my loom so today i made a good start on itthis is what i started withdidn't know what i need out of this lot so i just laid it all outthen after studying wiring diagrams and a few posts peeps have written up on converting 1.8t, i decided to start hacking my loom upheres the results of what i had done todaybasically there is 12 wires left that i need to wire up the fuse board which i have already figured out the connection for then thats the engine management side taken care of apart from vehicle speed sensor. ive left this off for now as im trying to keep standard mk2 16v clocks but i still need to work out how to get the revcounter working on a beer money budget, if i cant figure it out then i will just use vr6 clocks that i still havethe other bit of the wiring that i have got to sort out is this plugbasically this is for the temperture oil presure etc for the dash, most of this can be chopped out and i'll use the mk2 wiring modded for it
bentheboffin 1
sad sad day todayall my time and effort putting the vr in is slowly dissapearingheres how it looks as off this eveningbasically the vr lump is being sold in parts, hence why its being broken down, more profitable this way plus i dont have to source parts that i would of robbed of it for the 2mo lumpnext weekend i'm hoping to actually to get the 2mo lump built up and resting in the engine bay so i can finnish up mocking up the wiringoh yeah is it wrong for me to have ideas about reshelling it?!! :whoops: :whoops: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:
bentheboffin 1
jun 10no real update as such, just thought i'd try the borbets on for size since i had 10 mins to spare over at the unitrear arches need rolling and the arse needs lowering further but im only on shocks and springs at the mohas got an arch roller i could hire for an afternoonaug 10ok havnt touched this in months due to lack of funds, motivation and helping another mate of mine complete a g60 conversionso today i started of with an engine bay with only 12 valvesmain reason for removal as some of you may know is that it had blown a headgasket and generally didnt like wateron closer inspection on the engine once i pulled it out i found thisnice cracked block! lesson to be learnt never ever trust your brothers to put your car away, mine moved my car out of the workshop and never put it away again, so it was trapped outside in the snow with no anti freeze in itby the end of today i now had 24v resting under my bonnetit bolts in faily easy tbh, just have to remove the side engine mount and bolt on a standard rear vr6 mount. gearbox wise i used the vr box, clutch and flywheel which all bolts up directlythe only thing you have to mod is the front engine mount, cause where the starter motor top bolt bolts through the starter g/box and and engine on the 12v, the 24v block has the whole cut away so im just going to get a spacer made up so engine mount top just bolts up to the gearbox and starternow tomorrow im of to work out how on earth im going to plumb the cooling system in
bentheboffin 1
well another productive day spent on it todaymain aim was to get all the cooling sytem connectected, which was even easier than i thought it would be managed to rework all the 12v pipe work and utilise the 12v stat housing, the only real bit of fab i had to do was relocate the aux water pump from the fron of the block, back to the 12v position, attached to the head above the gearbox, to do this i just used the original 12v bracket and cut it down as i had no need for the big round electrical socket holder, i drilled an addition whole into so i could mount it to the head where a cable holder once lived. this meant the only pipe i hadd to have a think about was the on that goes from the head to the heater matrix, this i just flipped round and shortened it by about 2inches on each end, the take of for the throttle body is slightly kinked but i will have to see how it fairs up. the only other thing i have to do is fit a 36mm core plug to the front of the block as the aux water pump originally took its feed from a core plugheres a couple pics of how it looks under the bonnet now
bentheboffin 1
heres a couple pics of how it looks under the bonnet nowsince i managed to sort the cooling side out i thought id tackle the pedal box and adapt it for the dbw pedal. so out with the colum etc to get the pedal box out again! removed the accerator pedal and made a simple bracket for the dbw pedal to sit on and welded it to the pedal boxi havnt bolted it down yet but this is how the pedal will sit once ive sprayed it
bentheboffin 1
dec 10father xmas came early and brought me thisjust a shame i cant fit it for a whilei havnt got much left to do on it now so hoping to have the thing on the road for feburaryheres what i got left to dofit down piperefurb my d90sfinish wiringswap suspension over to coiliespolly bush front wishbonesmodify front engine mountthings left to puchaseecu, well it doesnt need puchasing but it does need moddingpcd wheel adaptors for the d90sa pair of tyresand also colour concept front seats, but these can wait for a while
bentheboffin 1
june 11well i thought id better update this as a lot of stuff has happened in the last 6 months and kind of lost touch with the dub world due to rebuilding my missus miniwell ive got the thing pretty much built now just gotta sort some niggles out with it like it not running properlly, think it needs new cop'salso theres a problem of it no holding water as the heater matrix is shot and a core plug needs changing again as it didnt seal properllythe last problem i have is my assembly is way too close to the inlet assembly and dipstick so i have to change thatheres a few random shotsoh also brought some new rims for it, just gotta save for some tyresoh did i mention it runsUoI0B-6YIKw
bentheboffin 1
got another couple of jobs done on this yesterdaysorted out my rad fan issues, as my fan assembly was way to close to my dipstic guide, you could barely squeeze a rizzla betwwen the 2no pics of it on the car but heres the difference between the 2 rad setupsoriginal rad set upnew fan set upnot much difference but the 2nd fan on the new setup is belt driven, so its not as deep. i now have a good 2cm of clerance now between fans and dipstick
bentheboffin 1
cheers budwasnt planning on doing anything today as im waiting on parts, but a tyre turned up that i had wone on ebay for my new alloys, so i went and fitted it to a wheel and trial fitted it to the car i think it will look nuts with a full set of these on, just need bigger brakes :-D
