BillyBantam 0
So I bought my Mk3 VR6 a couple of weeks ago, and think I have spotted a potential problem. The car seems to be a little lower on the front right. I have also noticed an unusual wear pattern on the inside of the front left tyre. After going through the paperwork it seems there was an advisory on the last MOT about the Macpherson strut. What I think the previous owner has done is replaced the strut with one from a Mk3 GTI. From what I can gather each strut is specific to the loads placed on it. Now correct me if I am wrong but the loads are going to be different from a GTI to a VR6, and this could be the reason for the drop on the front right. How easy is this to fix? I was thinking of putting a coilover kit on the car, and from what I can gather this replaces the struts.Hope somebody can help with thisThanks from a Noob
VRRob 0
Different struts wont make a diffrence in ride hight. Its the springs that do the ride height. A coilover kit would come with new struts and spings.
BillyBantam 0
Ok cool. Well I am definitely not imagining the difference in ride height between the left and right front (the front left is higher and wearing on the inside also). What do you think could be causing this? VRRob 0
it could possibly be a snapped spring... or maybe when he replaced the strut for the mot he put a second hand strut and spring form a diffrent car on and now one of the springs has more wear than the other causing one side to be weaker. as for the wear what sort of wear is it? smooth just on the edge? half the tyre? BillyBantam 0
Yeah the wear is smooth on the inside edge maybe about a quarter. It sounds like thats what he has done then. Getting the rear bearings replaced soon so will get the mechanic to check it out. Chances are I will get a coilover kit anyway, willing to spend a bit of money to get her looking good again. Her previous owner was a bit of a knob!!
VRRob 0
If its smooth wear could be a bush gone... If its feathering it could be tracking. Oh dear... Well atleat its in good hands now =)
BillyBantam 0
Ah well, like I said don't mind spending a bit of money on her. Getting some new tyres (Toyo T1Rs) on thursday to replace the crappy playschool tyres he put on her! Will get tracking looked at then. She will be great again

VRRob 0
No problems mate. Hope you get it all sorted ok.
bungy 2
Have you had the front wheels off to have a look and compare sides? To check if it is equal you can measure from top of arch lip to centre of wheel. When ever changing anything like that it is always best to replace in pairs but some people do bodge these things up. Not really worth putting your nice tyres on until you've found what is wrong.
BillyBantam 0
No I haven't had a look with the wheels off yet, but it is visually noticeable (after my mate mentioned it the other day!!). Unfortunately I have to put the tyres on becuase the ones on now are not legal, and I don't have the money to get it fixed until next month.
