Project Storm - (ex) Storm Grey 1995 VR6

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Just wanted to share my new VR6 with you now it's almost ready. I've had a rough ride over the last two years, with my old VR that I loved to bits, being stripped by thieving scum in the spring of 2008 whilst parked at a tuner's workshop. Said tuner then promised to put the car right, and yet in the summer of 2010 I was still waiting. Unfortunately I also lived with said tuner, more fool me, but that's another story for another time!

So this is how the last one looked at its peak - some of you may remember it, it's by no means a show-winner or anywhere close but it was quick, fun and I like the look of it. I tend to build cars for myself not for trophies, although I think the cars at the top of our scene are phenomenal and love checking them out at the shows!

I got another base car in Feb this year after the old shell simply wasted away parked in ***s yard. It was beyond saving by the time he finally pulled his finger out so we went and got another one, and found this little beauty on here:

So, work commenced! Originally it was to be a simple smoothing job, recreating the theme of the old one with a few twists. I LOVE Storm Grey so was keen to keep it that colour, but the best-laid plans and all that... Things progressed, and then it was finally ready for a trip to the paint shop. The place we used specialises in restoring vintage cars, and their work is pretty good, however the elderly Czech guy who was painting the car has a poor grasp of English. I had toyed with the idea of a touch of blue pearl in the lacquer to give the car a tint in some lights, as my old Schwarzmetallicke car had little hints of green and gold in the dusk, so I tried to convey this to Stanley in the best way I could. But he totally missed the point! I ended up with a blue car, which although a shock to the system at first, I realised was actually pretty sexy. There will be many more pics to come but a little teaser of the colour is below...

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE BUMPER ISN'T FITTED! Just hanging.

So fast forward to now, the car was painted but then just sat on said tuner's driveway for weeks, with nothing being done and his attitude suggesting that nothing would be. I finally snapped (thought I'd held it together pretty well considering I waited patiently for two years!) and towed it off his driveway after finding out that he'd "Lost" most of the parts I'd stockpiled for rebuilding it! I'd picked up some uber-rare Audi monblocks for it, which went missing. But the upside was that the one thing this guy DID do right was replace them with a superb set of Schmidt TH-lines which I have to say suit the car perfectly.

So then it was off to a new workshop where some good friends set about the car with love and big hammers :D

We're finally nearly there, and I will put up some proper pics when I can. The one above is just a teaser! Hope you like so far...

I still have plans for the engine, the old car had a beautifully-worked ported head with cams, big valves etc, a Corrado TB and a 2.9 bottom end but these seem to have "Gone missing" too. How strange... Other than that I just want to enjoy having a big V6 under my right foot for the first time in years, my lovely lady's 1.4 Pug 206 just doesn't cut it and is also quite scary on the limit! (Shhhh...) Hope to pop to a few shows with it, but like I said I'm not a show-car builder, you'll normally find me on a twisty B-Road rather than a concours!

Finally (for now) I want to say a big thank you to Joe, Mark, Tim, Andy, Marko and the others for the help with this project. I've needed it!

  • 6 months later...

So after a few months of evolution, tinkering and random play, the car's now looking like this...

Picked up a set of Recaro Speed reps in real leather, yes I know they're not the real thing but that means I can spend the 800-odd quid I saved elsewhere...

Unfortunately found a few little faults on the body, and close expert inspection revealed just what a lash up job the guy did on the prep. The paint is really well laid on but unfortunately the prep lets it down, plus I got side-swiped by a coach a fortnight ago anyway. Scraped the side and smashed the mirror (I have Lupo stubbies going on though!). So I've decided it's time for a respray - I get bored easily! Watch this space....!
