hi mate you shouldn`t need to jack the engine to replace the starter have you checked all the gear box to engine bolts or are they all tight it should go back in unless you have tightened the others up first if so try putting that one in first then the others?

The top long bolt that goes through the starter aslo goes through the front engine mount bracket. This could have moved, so it may require you to jack/lower the engine and loosen the other bolts that bolt through the bracket, then trying to get the top starter bolt in.
