'95 VR6 loss of power problem

Hi all,

I am running about 50-60% power right now, car has a good head. Power loss was fairly sudden symptom. Just sounds flat, actually fairly smooth, just no power, pretty difficult taking off, etc, occasionally seems to "float" a little better power for a couple seconds at a time.

fuel consumption showing 50% higher than normal (15-16L/100km instead of 10-11L/100km)

In past week I have:

changed air&fuel filters

looked VERY hard for vac leaks and broken wires

swapped MAF with "known good one" from eBay (don't suspect it because absolutely no change to symptom)

changed cat converter

current engine codes (after MAF replacement but I don't know how to reset them)

00553 MAF sensor G70 open circuit/short with power intermittent

00513 Engine speed sensor G28 no signal

other history:

coil pack replaced with brand new one 26,000 miles ago

head replaced 50,000 miles ago

plugs/wires changed 20,000 miles ago

Does anyone know if a crank sensor can cause this symptom? It doesn't seem likely to me. I am unemployed and don't want to keep throwing parts at it unless there is a reasonable chance of fix!

The engine speed sensor comes up as a fault if the engine isn't running at the time you pulled the fault codes out so don't worry about that.

Seems to me that it is a MAF sensor fault.. have you checked the reading to see if there is an open circuit?

Check intake pipe for cracks this will cause it to seem very flat as it's pulling in air after maf so giving a faulse reading!

Same goes for inlet gaskets etc!

Thanks guys can you explain how "check the reading to see if there is an open circuit"? Am I checking each pin at car's MAF connector to ground looking for some continuity on most or all wires? Ignition off OK? Thanks, Ed

Check the wiring from your MAF back to source. Look for rubbing or chafing first and then continuity if that shows nothing.

Thanks guys After MAF, cat, filters and wires It was the screen on bottom of airbox scuzzed out, probably undercoating residue and everything else, even saw mouse debris up against it from the outside!
