lossing cooling fluild from my overflow tank

Recommended Posts

Having a problem with my overflow tank losing fluild. Just changed my heater core two weeks. Things were fine afterwards. But then a week ago my warning light came on and my overflow tank was low. I need to bring it up to the min level every two days. Whats happening? I have no outward signs like splashing or dryed up fluild around the hoses. Where is my radiator fluild going? Any help would be appreciated. I own a 1997 vr6 (obd 2) 2.9 syncro variant.

lets start with the basics and I dont mean to teach you to suck eggs

does your expansion tank have a leak?

is the cap fitted correctly??

run the car at night or in the darker times and use a torch to see if you can see the drips or pressure leaks

I am sure someone will be along with more shortly,,,

Ideally, a pressure test is required. Are your heaters getting hot? Have you had a look around the water pump area both primary and auxillary? Checked thermostat housing leaking? The connecting pipe along the front of the engine? If your putting in a litre a week, unless your burning it, it should be quite easy to spot.

Hi guyIs:

Appreciate all the replys. Also sorry for the delay in answering. I'm about 8 hours ahead of you guys in the states.

I believe the comment about over tightening might be on the spot. Today when I went to work, I park in an underground garage. Before parking I covered the area under the motor with paper towels. When I drove off several

hours later the towels were dry and spotless. I did use regular hose clamps for the two plastic nipples coming out of

the firewall from the heater core, and I probably over tightened them. I will check for sure this weekend. The thermostat

housing should be cool because I replaced it this summer, along with all the sensors and thermostat. I also have some pics of my car, where on the forum can I post those pics?
