The dash on my '94 VR6 keeps going off randomly. It makes like a ticking noise when it goes off, and it always comes back on while using something else electrical like a window, or an indicator, any ideas what might be causing it. It might be shorting out, I dont know :S

You could well be right actually, when I startup now it sort of struggles but its not like the engine is struggling, it still goes pretty fast. Engine bay smells of sulphur - thought it was the Cat but it could well be the battery. Altho most of the electrics still operate fine it seems to just be the dash and the startup sort of???

yep, try a decent batt then, its one of those things people skimp on as they think "oh its just a battery" and get a £25 halford one, Mines a sealed dry cell battery which has a 5 year warranty, I went into the local battery specialist and asked for the highest cranking power battery I could fit in the battery bag and be suitable for the VR, think it was £50ish with trade discount

Bad earth? Then when you operate the electric windows it earths thought that causing the dash to become alive again... Sounds more like a bad earth/ conection problem to me but im not ruling out the battery, Cars can be strange things somtimes..

Check all your levals and do a hydromiter test on all cells.. Then a drop test and check all cells for heavy gassing. If all it good then your batterys alright

Try wiggling your key in the igntion, Could be somthink todo with that

  • 2 weeks later...

Rite I've just come back from a week away and the battery is most definitely knackered. No electricals work, no central locking or alarm and defo no hope of her starting. Gonna have to get a new battery and work from there. Hopefully its just the battery that was causing the malfunctions but I dunno. Cheers 4 all who've helped.
