andywright455 0
Just got my car back on the road today after 2 weeks and £400 When i heard the light rattle on idle i had hoped it was on the cheap side of the engine but no, A second opinion confirmed it was the chains , Oh Joy. anyhow long story short it was prettly painless (except the money) my local VW dealer had the bits in next day and i treated myself to some new lifters too as the old ones were getting a bit tappety.Going over this site i kind of knew that 100,000 was time to do the chains but i wasnt expecting how bad they would be at just under 91,000both guides were broken and the bits that were left were so brittle they fell apart taking them off, the chains were so streched that the timing was a tooth out and the tensioners were right at the end of their travel ( the top tensioner was running on the very top 6-7mm )the whole job took 10 hours and was a lot easier than i was expecting and the car is now totally different, it runs far smoother and the lumpy idle has gone.if anyone out there is approaching that magic mileage just bite the bullet and do it, its probably worse than you think

andywright455 0
No sorry VW charged me £260 for the chain kit and the lifters and it cost me £150 for my local garage to do the work although i have been mates with him for a long time ( and he is still my mate after making hime work a bank holiday weekend lol) what i did notice was that all the plastic parts in the engine bay were very brittle, and the aux water pump has rotted really badly under the rubber bracket so that will need changed soon another thing we found was that a pair of fiesta Mk2 rear brake adjusters make perfect cam locking tools almost made to measure
