ben_notts 0
hey everybody, been lurking for a while but finally got round to registering today.ive just upgraded from a 1.8 GL to my lovely VR 2.8 with the intention of taking all my parts off my GL straight to the VR. got all the cosmetics dont no probs but then to my dismay found my 'multifit' rims 'that will go on any car - quote salesman dont. and neither will my spring / damper kit due to the block weight of the VR.old car before it was dropped....... so now im a bit stumped for choices its got clean BBS 15's on it and stock everything. ATM im looking for wheels and some springs to lower it a little. i had gas dampers and a 40mm drop with 17's (just an OEM sport kit off ebay) on my old golf but it was REAL hard and not very comfy at all to drive so im just after a little input on what would give a nice ride but still hold the road better than my stock setup.ive seen these santa monica's on ebay for reasonable: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/16-SANTA-MONICA-ALLOY-WHEELS-AUDI-VW-RS4-GOLF-GTI-RS6_W0QQitemZ180107700455QQihZ008QQcategoryZ28648QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD4VQQcmdZViewItembut also some sick rims on the dubmeister link for some RH toplines, im looking to spend roughly £500after lurking through tonnes of threads it seems people generally say 16's ride smoother than 17's so i think im gonna go the 16" route with a steady 40mm drop all round as nottingham is about 90% speedbump!sorry for the essay but im stumped on what to do and would rather make an informed decision than rush out and buy somethiung i might later regret!cheers Ben. rodney 17
I think you summed it up for yor self quite nicely there . If you're not worried about going low then get a quality kit such as Koni and drop the fixed30-40mm and adjust the shocks to suit on the ride!Something like... Though you'll need to make sure they're correct for your individual car..http://www.larkspeed.com/index.pl?a=i&p=261712AShop around for the deal of the week if you see what I mean. I managed to get mine for £225 + deliveryI'm still using my 15s on a that drop and works fine on all but the very biggest sleeping policemen/humpsI hope it helps
ben_notts 0
yeah nice 1 for that. i think im gonna go for the drop first then wheels. i know koni are real good but what other brands are comparable EG weitec or bilstein is anyone riding on those and what sort of hardness are they? ive seen some 'comfort sport' dampers for BMW's that claim they give much better handling than stock but dont give a rock hard ride like their 'street / race' dampers they did, forgot who made them tho! im just wondering if there is something comparable for VW's.also even stock without a drop my splitter still catches on things like when i roll outta my drive over about 3 MPH so i dont wanna go too low!Cheers Ben
nivag27 5
Hello mate, I have just lowered my vr from stock, I used GMax shocks and springs, probably not the best, but they cost me £220 delivered with a 40mm drop and they are not to hard at all but do give good handling. And I am also still on stock 15" rims.

rodney 17
I think most people on here are on the Gmax or Koni options. Both work well and both give good quality ride and handling. Others work also. If you have a personal preference or experience of a brand then go with that. Once up and runnning let us know how the install and finished item is/are!I understand that the best combo are Eibach springs and Koni shocks. I cannot tell you why other than VW/Golfs seem to respond well to them! There is a lot to be said for the deal you can get on the main brands . I went for Koni as I know the brand and the deal was there!Good luck!
