My VR is due a major service (1996P 78k) and I'm contemplating going to the local VW dealer (a mate has a 2005 GTI & is pleased with the service he gets there). Alternatively, I could go to a local garage (shed in back garden job - but very good as my old man uses this guy). The car has had main dealer stamps since new. If I was to sell the car in 2 years or so would main dealer servicing from new help to sell it on/retain the car's value that much? I am leaning towards the main dealer at the moment... Any advice would be welcome...

Hi Roan, I personally had bad experience with my local vw main dealer - and so did my gf with her brand new polo. A mate of mine who has an audi S3 also had bad experience with Caffyns. However some main dealers are probably a lot better (they should be good considering what they charge per hour!!) Following my bad service with my local vw main dealer I now take it to The Phirm who are a VR6 specialist and charge half what they do but are far more experienced. The Phirm do all the cars for VW Performance magazine. The Phirm are based in the south near Farnham, surrey.

Stealth are another very good VR6 specialist - again they only charge 40per hour. They are based south of Birmingham.

Both of these companies are recommended by most on here.

However if you can't get to either of these then it's up to you where you take it. If your local garage knows how to treat the VR lump then take it there (i.e he has knowledge about it, that it uses semi-synthetic oil, use G12+ antifreeze etc). A full main dealer service history always looks good but it's less important on a car that is at least 10yrs old now. You won't lose any value when you come to sell it if you use your local garage - as long as it has a full service history that's all that matters.

Cheers for the advice Matt. I took it aslong to this guy yesterday - he does know pretty much everything about all cars. He told me what I knew already about the car (Oil, Antifreeze, known problems like the timing chains/head gasket/oil use etc) which made me feel a bit better. Its booked in on Monday week for discs/pads, wheel bearing and a major service. When I phoned the VW place, I asked what the major service (quoted £220) included - the girl just said "everything" but couldn't tell me if they would charge me for new plugs (NJK ones fitted >15k ago). Didn't inspire confidence!!
