Bealieboy reacted to VR6Pete in Obd1 slc smoking blue after warm up
Hi buddy.
Doesn't sound good! Blue smoke as you know indicates oil being burnt. but on idle sounds pretty bad. Are you using a lot of oil?
With you mentioned about the PCV delete, it could be throwing oil back into the intake manifold causing it to burn more oil, so I would personally restore the PCV valve to rule that out initially and check if you have oil re-circulating into your inlet manifold, of course you mentioned you used to get light blue smoke when warmed up, rings should seal a bit better when up to temp so unless you are hearing any slap when warming up it is "reasonably" safe to assume they are OK and to look at valve guides and seals.
At 142k I would certainly say you will need to look at the condition of the head / valve guides and seals. Exhaust valve guides tend to start wearing after 80k and would tend to cause blue smoke when coming off the throttle.
What grade oil are you using? bare in mind anything too thin could cause it to smoke more with being a higher mileage - would recommend Syntha Silver 10/40 semi synthetic.
A Compression test will help of course, I have also read that if the readings are low in a cylinder to pour 1 teaspoon of engine oil into the plug hole and retest. If the reading jumps, the piston rings are worn. If not, then it will lead to a valve related issue.
Hope this helps! Please post up your compression readings later so we can help further

Bealieboy reacted to bennyk in Golf VR6 OEM Restoration
Been trying to get somewhere with this, as people keep pestering me to buy it!
Got it serviced and the plugs changed, they looked like they'd been in the a while!
Removed a few bits of trim including the rear spoiler to make a nicer job of claying and machine polishing;
Whilst it was off used an old trick with a hot air gun to bring it back to life, before;
Then half way through;
Then broke the mop out to see how it was going to come up,
Quite nice was the answer to that! Love mystic blue!
This believe it or not was all of the rust on one of the ORIGINAL! front wings!!! I kid you not! -

Bealieboy reacted to RBPE in What would you pay?
You'll be surprised though, that's why I'm asking. I've been seeing nice mk1's and 2's going for £6-8k on stock engine good nick but not even showroom condition. These type's of conversions were £6k for a 150hp one pretty much when I was doing them 5-10 years ago and even now they seem to still be £4k+ and we're trying to work out some decent costings as they're getting loads of interest - thought I would look for an impartial VR owner view point!
I think figures bandied about are like £3k for a 150/180 to £3.5k or so for a ko4 set-up, I can map them up to a Stage 1 too for like £150 extra for them, do you reckon that's a fair price all in? I hope they get to do it as they are so passionate, just got mouths to feed so it's a side hobby for them at the mo whilst they do their regular work! Mint/restoration side is, like you say, dependent on quality.
Did a Corrado with hybrid billet ko4 they built but it was wrote off 3 days later but got this to tune this afternoon;
AGU engine, APU wiring loom and AUM ECU with a BAM map on this one - nice little mish-mash! It had 22 DTC's when it came to me as it was a VVT ecu and no VVT on the engine, SAI delete's, N249, etc. Coded them all out and now it's purring like a kitten with a ko4, bam maf and injectors....... there's loads of Ford ST boys around here banging and popping about so this will be a proper VAG car, understated but fast!
Some of the old skool;
That Jetta is so clean, ABF too;
