Hi all. For sale is my dragon green 1997 Golf VR6. Unfortunately due to an imminent house move, and a couple of lax buyers, the car has to go ASAP as it's currently SORN and sat on my drive. Priced to sell as I need it gone! The plan was always to fix it up but unfortunately that time has passed. I've owned the car since 2010 and had some great times in it so I'm really hoping someone will grab it, even if it's just stripped for parts. I shall have to scrap it come mid-July, so please rescue it! I'm home from 6PM so come take a look after then. £300 ONO. Ba

Things to do while replacing water pump

Thanks Lukey, will do the above as well. When I flush everything where should I put the water in and where shall I let it pi$$ out of? I was thinking of flushing from the heater matrix input and draining from the bottom of the rad... I love it when a plan comes together... New starter arrived today, got the day off work and it's not gonna rain. Woop! -

I'm 27 and had my VR for 3 years now... Only car I've ever owned =) Between keeping it on the road and having a bike addiction it's not been modded... yet. She's a keeper! -
So after 25k of trouble free raggage the VR (now at 101k) needs a bit o' love The water pump has started to leak and been temporarily K-sealed, aux water pump is dead, starter motor is now dead and there are a more than a few rusty spots under the hood. While I'm doing these bits what else should I replace / strip and reassemble? Here's the shopping list so far: Starter Water Pump (new pulley too?) Serp. belt & tensioner (possibly just regrease it, see what it looks like) All coolant hoses (and maybe thermo housing & crack pipe if they get broken in the process) Front engine mount (si

Not that anyone will be interested / teaching granny to suck eggs; turns out if you only do 500 miles in a year, mostly in 3 mile journeys then plugs get covered in carbon, injectors get crudded up and the car don't work properly. Dear Santa, please get my mum to drive her car more so it doesn't fall apart and I have to fix it. Love Jason.

Now of course our superior-to-most-cars-of-that-age VR6s have a lovely trip computer which includes MPG... My mum's golf mk4 cab. which I'll be using this weekend (bloody thing needs driving, only goes to the shops and back so injectors full of shit, plugs carboned-to-the-max, etc etc etc) hasn't got it. Is there an OBDII measuring block that gives an MPG figure? Alternatively, is there an application I can download (for free) which will calculate mpg for me via the cheapo USB/OBD eBay dongle I have? Hi all, are the golf mk4 1999 models OBDII? My mum's cabriolet is on the blink and I wanna know if my vag-com dongle will work... but the internet is a pisser to find info sometimes, and I ain't doing 200 miles round trip to find out! S reg, so it will be AEH engine code. Ta

Nice one guys... don't like the look of the bolts though, I doubt they've ever been touched. Plusgas all the way! Daverse, will that not trash the pump when it runs dry? I'm paranoid.

Off with the tank then. Never done it before, I suppose remove the straps, unplug the pump & disconnect the lines... How is the filler pipe attached? Is it seperate or does the whole pipe, cap etc. drop down with the tank? Ta. (Should really get myself a haynes manual...

Hi lads & lasses, what's the best way to completely drain the fuel tank? Since running on LPG it doesn't get filled very often, it'd be interesting to see how much water & crap is in there, especially as winter is round the corner (apparently!) Ta

We use dry ice at work all the time - I think it's a great idea! Some sort of heat exchanger is a must though, I reckon the best bet would be to modify the top of a standard airbox presenting a cold surface to the air coming out the filter. A handy hint is to use dry ice slush - mix the pelleted dry ice with a solvent (meths works well), increases the conduction of heat to the ice. Bit of a fire hazard though... best to have a good breather for the dry ice reservior. One problem you will have is the water freezing out of the air onto the cold surface insulating it - from -78 degrees to 0 degre

Thx Jamie, I have already checked the heater and it seems fine. Hopefully the pressure test will throw up something! was thinking of making up some sort of pressure testing myself, screw a tyre valve into a tank cap...

Hi all, So after 20k of not-missing-a-beat daily motoring my VR has started to lose coolant. Not too fast, but I did half a litre in 500 miles on the weekend. Checked the thermo housing and crack pipe and both look fine and there are no obvious leaks or puddles etc under / in the car. No sign at all of any water leaks! Plus no mayo on the dipstick or filler cap, no oil in the coolant... grrr! I'm gonna replace the expansion tank cap (it's a OBDII with the blue cap) but apart from that, I'm out of ideas! Next steps are get the coolant system pressure tested and check compression... I'm guessing

Finally got round to doing the tie rods (inner and outer) and it hasn't cured the rattle in my steering - Is it time for a new rack or are there any other linkages I should look at first? Thanks in advance
