HELP! Rough idle, stalling, undriveable!!!
badboyV6 replied to jonnyedinburgh's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Contact trading standards m8.... Youve been robbed!!! -
some people are just after something for nothing - everyone wants value for money but some people take it too far.... I remember a couple of years back i was looking for a decent mk2 valver and seen this one on autotrader, it looked absolutely lovely in the picture and it had full oem leather (which was rare in a mk 2!!) He told me the car was immaculate etc etc, when i went to see it it was a shed, the interior was tatty, there was bits of trim missing etc, it drove sloppy. I drove 200 hundred miles to see it and was gutted when i got there, the guy was desperate for cash too as hed lost his

Exactly the same thing situation happened to me a few weeks ago. Had to take a day off work and buy leads from euro car parts, when i changed them it starting missing like fook- First of all my heart sank as i thought coil pack, then chilled and thought about it.... it was fine before so it turned out one of the leads wasnt seated properly. I took my time and reseated each lead and it worked a treat. The leads i bought arent as good as the VAG items though and a few people have had faulty aftermarket leads from the likes of Euro car parts and GS&F so you wouldnt be the first.... Bit of adv

will do, will let you know if i get hold of some!

no, my valver had a 136k on the clock, and as all GTI's are was probably thrashed all its life!! Honestly ran sweet as a nut and no smoke whatsoever. A couple of mechanic friends also used it on their valvers too with no ill effects!! Throttle response in particular was so much better for a start...

Thats really angered me too mate. I hate garages that try to rip you off for their incompetent skills- I dont mind spending money on getting my car sorted. But to put it another way you shouldnt be paying for someone to keep guessing the problem and getting you to pay the price. You should pay them to diagnose and fix the fault accurately. And to let you drive the car away running like a bag of sh*te adds insilt to injury. Makes me think they didnt even road test it!!! -
Ah i see, spose it makes sense....

Does anyone know why two pumps were fitted? If the mechanical pump was not enough why not just make it bigger in the first place? Or is the auxillary only supposed to kick in, in when stuck in traffic on a hot day for instance.

Shame about the power mate, Still looks a beauty though, even though its dirty

Mate, that isseriuosly taking the piss!!!!! I would be going fecking nuts if i had spent that ammount of money for parts that werent needed!!!!! Most garages who cant tell what the fault is will replace whatever they think it is and bill you later saying it was needed, however you drove it away each time and yet it was the same. I would seriuosly consider asking for your money back with your old parts fitted, or going to the small claims court!!!!! -
Hi all, while i was thinking of my old mk 2 i remembered an awesome little treatment i used on it. A friend of a friend whos a mechanic takes part in lots of road rallys in a tuned up twin cam 1.6 corolla (which shifts!). He managed to get hold of this forte gas treatment- comes in a tin. Basically it completely decokes the engine. My mate who is also a mechanic gave me a tin to put in my old valver- which had 136k on the clock. Sucked it up through the vacuum pipe on the metering head. while idling it and then rising the reveto about 3k to clear it out. First of all it started throwing out bl

yeah definitely, my mate bought mine and i went in it not long ago. Miss the bark at full chat, the super sharp handling and feel, funny sitting in it too- the windscreen seems really upright after owning mk3's for so long... I would love to have a go in one again, would definitely love to own one as a second car again....
-
my valver did, possibly cos i used to rag it so much miss my mk2

How the feck did they damage the roof? Messers!
-
Souns like it could be the thermostat is stuck closed. Temp sensor is ok as your fans are kicking in. I think someone told me theres an auxillary electric pump.....
-
And it if the metal points seem dirty- clean em and make sure theyre nice and shiny. Check the rotor arm as well.... You can do that for free
-
Yes Tommo, i love the sound of scraping valves in the morning!!
-
Even so, cheap mod for someone with a mk2!!
-
Low miler too - gutted for ya m8.... Catch 22 cos if you claim your out of pocket cos of your insurance...Have you found out how much it would go up by? I think you could claim but buy the car back at a (very) cheap price (a friend of mine did it) I think he sold all the bits and put the money towards the insurance rise and other bits for his new motor... Pitch it right and you could make quite a bit- but it depends how much you payed for it....If you can prove its low mileage your engine and box could be worth good money, then theres other ancilleries, tyres, interior dashboard, airbags, exh

Yeah iv spotted it on the VW website, have to pop in and get one- bought one from GTI show a few years ago and payed a fiver- thought that was cheap! 3 quid is a bargain. As for the short shift kit- i know - Pete8tch pointed it out- gutted. Should read things more carefully!!! It does say mk 3's though: As far as i know all of the mk3 GTI's and VR6's are cable change. Dont see the point of putting a short shift kit on a 1.4

I allways drive it up to 2k rpm until it reaches about 70-75 degrees and this usually happens very quickly but i also warm down after a good run by driving up to about 3k for about a mile befor i shut off!! It all helps prolong the life of the engin IMO!! Mike. Thats true as far as i know, a mechanic friend always told me to let the car idle after a blast so the oil pressure settles.....
-
Thats bad news m8, i spose at leat everyone was ok- doesn make you feel any better though......Break and sell it all on ebay- Most of it will go to people on here Ive seen engines alone go for 600 quid....If youve got leather thats worth 500 quid in good nick.

Same as ACF, its great when you havent been in it for ages and take it out. And also when you spend time cleaning it and getting the admiring glances from passers by - (especially fellow dubbers) And maybe middle of summer going on a major camping mission with your mates- going in convoy with a long drive and a beautiful day ahead!!!
