badboyV6 replied to badboyV6's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
The cars only done 65k!!!! And i know its legit!! It was owned by a fanny driver for a few years and was used to pootle around in... The garage i went to is a VW/Audi specialist in Stonehouse, Gloucester. They are also a superchips dealer and race Vento VR6's and have a 220BHP mk IV golf rally car and a beetle RSI cup racer! They are really friendly - just had a service and he did a lot of other little things for me and didnt charge me anything. So bearing that in mind i think that 300 is a pretty fair price - do yuo think? My feeling is though if its the rings ( :-| ) Thats going to be anothe -
Just taken my VR in for an oil change and coolant change back to G12. I asked them to run a compression test to keep my mind at rest. Came back compression should be 170. Its running between 120 and 170 and varying between cylinders..... Heads going to need to come off. They tell me it could be guides, valve seats many thing- for fooks sake im depressed now.... Theyve given me a quote of around 400 quid to recondition it and get it working right. This sound fair to me What do you think? Im going to buy tappets as well and get them to put them in. Im gutted cos i cant afford to get it done now

Common problems on VR6 engines?
badboyV6 replied to Ben Allen's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
oh yes - ive heard lots of horror stories about monkey mechanics. Ive also learnt from that. My old mk3 16v went into the Garage i bought it from to have a new timing belt fitted- as it was agreed before sale. When i got it back after about 2 weeks it started to lose power then wouldnt start. Anyway went into a friends garage. It turns out the monkey didnt do up the crank pulley tight enough and it slipped on the key way fooking it up- only problem is the keyway is on the crank- hence new crank and labour- lots of money!!!! and the garage closed down a week later with no compensation to be had -
VW suppplied them from the dealerships from new along with a host of other goodies. Didnt think you could get them anymore but im sure somebody does them...

Common problems on VR6 engines?
badboyV6 replied to Ben Allen's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Thats not a bad price TBH m8- would probably expect around 550 to 650 for chain replacement and 100 quid is good for a clutch (they cant charge you much as they are taking the box out anyway) I thought youd be looking at least 120 for a clutch unless you mean just 100 labour??? in which case thats taking the piss!! -
mine is quite light too. Although it is definitely on its way out- getting to the top of the pedal now and can get it to slip if im brutal- probably need a new one in 10k. Usuually id say if your clutch pedal was really heavy itd be the thrust bearing on its way out but not too sure when a hydraulic clutch is involved as youd think that the hydraulics would eliminate most of the hard work required with an increasingly resistant thrust bearing....

Common problems on VR6 engines?
badboyV6 replied to Ben Allen's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Only the early boot lids rusted as the later ones are galvanised :-) Do get some rust on the golfs- the inner sills (underneath the platic trim as you open the door) Ive had that on both mine! and sometimes on the lower part of the door. Occasionally on the arches but this is only surface rust usually. Stone chipt are a real killer as well- especially when its lowered and doing motorway driving!!!! -
Yeah the DSG is supposed to be quicker same setup as the TT with 2 clutches. I read in a road test a few weeks ago though that apparently they couldnt get it to go any quicker than the manual. Although im sure on top gear they said they could?!?!? Anyway its still an achievment to get an auto to nearly match a manual!!

Common problems on VR6 engines?
badboyV6 replied to Ben Allen's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
VW recommend 100k Personally id be paranoid and change them at 90k..... I have heard a few stories of head gasket failures on Cylinder 6. Apparently the gasket is slightly thinner. But it is not a common problem IMO. Wheel bearings ( althiugh not engine related) seem to be a problem although it is cheap to sort- i think ive replaced at least 2 on each of the 4 Mk3 Golfs (2 x GTI 16V's and 2 VR6's) i have owned. Clutches tend to need replacing at around 70- 80k. And if the car has cheap leads prepare to replace them as they are shite. The red OEM ones or blue Magnecor are best and are £100. I t -
968 club sport would be nice :-)
-
Yeah but youd lose a packet in depreciation on an E46!!! And they are as common as escorts these days... My mum had a 325 2001 model. It lost 10k in 2 years!!! New 3 series out in spring.... Wait for the next R32 :-) :-)
-
If youve got the money then go for it!!! I think they are stunning cars. Not just for the looks but for the package as a whole. Would have to be a 3 dr though... All the reviews say they are top notch- havent heard that said for the GTI for quite a while.
-
coool!! It sure this is going to be a right grin then- along with the piss up in the evenings!! :-)

oBrentacre are pretty good- based near where i used to live in Swansea. But they could never quite match HIC. Never tried green light but heard good things.... Only thing is with elaphant is they dont do DD- (although im only paying 280 quid TPFT with 6 points at 25) :-) :-) the joy of getting older
