  1. You should have a word with someone that goes to insurance disposal auctions. A stolen/recovered Highline that's had the seats stripped out of it would be ideal. Once you've sold off the surplus engine it would work out very, very cheap.

  2. The mk1 Audi A3 never had a V6 option, so a suitable subframe wouldn't be available for a straight fit. Nice idea though!

    Fitting the running gear to a mk4 Polo would also make for a very quick car, but the Polo's looks aren't to everyone's tastes.

    If I was you, I would definitely go for a mulberry highline, even if it means having to get your Polo handles etc resprayed.

  3. For 27k I would want a car that does the lot. 911s are an absolute hoot to drive, but they're not a lot of use when you want to get a flatpack wardrobe from Ikea or pick your mates up from the pub.

    If I had 27k to spend on a car, there would be no question whatsoever - it would have four little circles on the front and an RS4 badge on the back. Two days later it would have a Revo remap and 450BHP. Yeah, baby!

    But for £13-14k the mk4 R32 is a bit of a bargain really when you look at what you get.

    We shouldn't slag off the R32 in any way. We should be glad that VW are continuing to evolve the 6-cylinder Golf concept when it is such a low volume, "niche" car. At the end of the day, VW could, if they wanted to, go the same way as Subaru & Mitsubishi and base all the performance Golfs around four cylinders, 16 valves and a turbo, but they know that there are enthusiasts like us out there who want the refinement & lovely noises that you can only get from a sweet six. Long live the R32, that's what I say. Well, that is, until the R36 comes out, anyway!

  4. The 4Motion is a great base car to work from if you want to do some modding. They are relatively cheap to buy and will make 300BHP easily if you fit a 'charger and the haldex 4wd will allow you to make use of all that power (unlike in a FWD mk3 VR6).

    The standard-looking exterior would make it a real sleeper too.

    Definitely worth a look if you find one for the right price.

    the stats for r32 is wrong it was 1.33 it got not 1.30...they said it was amazing how it was only one second slower than the focus RS...at 1.32

    That was the mk4 R32. I would expect a mk5 R32 with DSG to be at least a second quicker, so maybe the original post refers to the mk5.

    The Audi TT V6 (which has the same engine as the R32) put in a time of 1.32.7, which is still better than the CTR's 1.36.5

    You can't blame BOTH times on favourable weather conditions.

    Face it - the Golf R32 is superior to the Civic type R in every respect. It's faster, handles better, sounds better, looks nicer, has a nicer interior, is more refined and has far more presence. You would have to stick Pavarotti & Dawn French in the back of the R32 for the CTR to stand any sort of a chance. You may as well be comparing Giorgio Armani with George at Asda, or an entrecote steak with a McBurger & cheese.

    As soon as the cabrio sells and I have my shiny new R32, I will happily pee all over a CTR on the dragstrip. Then somebody lend me a mk3 VR6 with a Schrick, cams & a 3.94 FD and I will happily humiliate it again.

    Nice one!

    So all that remains then is to get hold of a cheap mega-mileage highline and start swapping bits over. I reckon you'll have great fun doing this, and there will be plenty of opportunity to detail the engine bay at the same time!

    While you're waiting for the right car to come up, how about sending your Schrick & other engine bits for a bit of mirror polishing? ;)

  7. Just to update the thread, supercharger kit has now been sold and the engine returned to standard.

    Thanks to all those that have followed this project and made such positive comments every step of the way.

    The project has had its ups & downs but, all in all, it's been great fun and definitely a worthwhile diversion from the daily grind of work & wife.

    Hopefully the next owner will be able to build on what I've done and truly take the cabrio to the next level!

  8. I used to have a pair of Schrick 268 cams in my VR. Along with a BMC CDA filter, milltek exhaust and raceland 6 branch manifold and a custom remap it made a smooth, reliable 205BHP with no noticable loss of fuel economy or road manners.

    Later on, I sold the cams and went supercharged. This turned out to be a very bad move which almost wrecked my engine. I wish I'd have held onto the cams now.

    Likewise, head work is alway a good idea, especially if the head needs a recon anyway.

    Yes, resistors that frig the output of the temperature sensor are a total scam, but this is not what this guy is selling - check out the link - it is for a replacement EPROM for the ECU.

    It's probably a copy of a remapped ECU chip. i.e. someone takes a standard VR6 for a professional remap, then sticks the remapped chip into an EPROM copier, makes copies and sells them off for 30 quid a pop. The blank chips themselves cost less than a fiver and, although doing this IS a breach of the tuner's intellectual property rights (and hence illegal), there is no way that the breach of copyright can be proved as far as I know.

    In theory, as long as your VR6 is of otherwise standard spec, one of these chips should produce a similar performance improvement as a custom remap, give or take the small difference between engines. If fitted along with a decent air filter, you should see close to 10BHP over stock.

    However, unlike a custom remap, you have no come-back if the car turns out to perform worse. Also, I doubt the chips are tested after burning so there is always the possibility of being sent a dud. If you decide to buy one of these, ask the seller about his return/replacement policy for any dead-on-arrival chips before bidding.

    As long as you don't f*ck up the installation, it shouldn't do any damage to your engine and at worst you will have only wasted 30 quid. On a cheap, older VR6, it might be worth a punt.

    We welcome any feedback from anyone that has fitted one of these chips, especially those who have dyno plots that prove/disprove the seller's claims.

    Note that if you have other significant engine mods (cams, schrick manfold etc) then you should definitely NOT run any "off the shelf" chip. If your mods go beyond a 'zorst and a filter, a custom remap is the only way to go.

  10. Gievn the choice, I would go for an R32 engine swap - 250BHP with factory reliability & manners, and you still have the option of supercharging it later on for even more power!

    The problem is that R32 engines are hard to find - you could be waiting months, if not years, for a decent one to come up here in the UK. If you decide to supercharge your VR you could be up and running within a couple of weeks!

  11. I made a few enquiries about the conversion.... 1.8T into a VR6 is actually harder than fitting an R32 lump. You need to swap in a mk3 16v subframe, gearbox, 'shafts & engine mounts in order for the engine to go in. Then there's the intercooler, which is a completely bespoke job that I've never seen done the same way twice,

    The good news is that, once the engine is fitted and the intercooler plumbed in, QPEng can sell you a plug & play ECU & wiring loom which makes the electrical side of things very straightforward. The chip fitted to their ECU disables the immobiliser and gives you an extra 50BHP over the standard engine, which is nice!

    QPEng can also supply a ready made exhaust downpipe for a 1.8T in a mk3.

    Assuming you did all the work yourself, I reckon you'd be looking at ~£1800 on top of the cost of the engine.

    If I wanted to build a 1.8T mk3, I would go searching for a complete mk3 16v with a knackered engine as the base car TBH.

  12. Manual All the way for me - If i still have my car in the next 2 years - i'll be putting an R36 with a R32 manual gearbox in the MK3. Hopefully i'll have more funds to Charge it aswell..... But i need to convert it 2 4wd and thats going to chew up 60% of my money :'(.

    But 450bhp 4wd mk3 would be the bollox i think :-)

    Just buy a VR6 Syncro and use the existing gearbox & drivetrain... I'm assuming the 3.6 fits straight onto a VR6 gearbox like the 3.2 - I don't know a lot about the new engine other than the fact it uses a totally new block with a 10.6 degree vee (rather than 15 degrees in the VR, 2.8 24v & 3.2)
