BRG 0
Hi All,good news is that vr6oc.com is not barred from my work anymore so I am back and browsing all the useful info here! bad news is...Noticed that I have recently got some horrible looking creamy gunk on the oil cap - its only appeared recently and the car had been sitting for over a week, but I suspect the worst.a couple of Q's1 - Is the only cause for this a blown head gasket ? ( I topped up header tank with about 1/2pint early Jan)2 - Assuming it is the head gasket, is there any other work worth doing while its all apart?its a '96 in case that makes any differenceany advice much appreciatedcheers
Craig 0
It is not necessarily indicative of head gasket failure. You can get gunk on the oil filler cap if the car has been used mainly for short journeys for a period of time.Has there been a noticeable drop in performance lately? ingham 5
main thing, is oil clean still, as oil cooler can leak water into oilhave you noticed any loss of water or oil?may be short journeys, keep an eye on levels
BRG 0
thanks for the quick responses,I haven't really noticed a drop in performance, but I do do a lot of short journeys hopefully that is what it is. booked in for service next tuesday so I'll find out then I guess.it hasn't used any more oil than usual, get thru a litre every 2-3 months, but it has lost some water although again not an alarming amount
Petesvw 0
VRs are prone to the mayo effect mate.
SankysVR6 1
best to get the oil changed and take out for a good run. Then check the oil cap for any mayo, It could be just the cold weather.
bazz780 0
if the dipstick dont have that mayo stuff on it then you should be fine, the cap builds the gunk due to condensation and as mentioned short journeys.hope this helps
BRG 0
i'm liking the sound of all this, no mayo on the dipstick, cold weather - short journeys - crap oil all sounds familiar, will let you know next week.
