Tesco 99 Octane RON fuel

Recommended Posts

Hi

I noticed a while back Tesco were trialing 99 octane rated fuel in a few select garages. They now do it in virtually every superstore garage. Is it damaging to run the car on a high octane rated fuel or use octane booster?

My car certainly feels smoother running on the Tesco 99 fuel. However I know the car won't obviously gain any power unless it has a remap when the car is full up on the 99 ron fuel, on a rolling road.

Has anyone had their car remapped (if you have a remappable Dastek ECU or similar) to run on 99 ron fuel - what kind of power gains did you get running on it?

Is a Dastek ecu self learning like the standard ECU on the ODB2 Golf VR6 or does it require a remap each time something is changed?

Theres nothing wrong with running on high octane fuel (apart from the cost) Its actually better running it on super than ordinary unleaded. Your car will run better and give more power on higher octane fuel but you have to work out whether the extra cost is justified for a few bhp gain.

I don't notice any difference with 99 than Optimax tbh. Evo magazine tested all the different fuels recently and apart from the Sunoco race fuel, they rated Optimax as the best all rounder. They tested all the fuels on a dyno using a MK5 GTI.

The advantage of high octane is relaxes the knock sensors, so it tunes itself, no need for a remap tbh. If you did map the base timing for 99 ron, then you'd be stuffed if you had to use 95.

Thanks Shail, Hayes Bulls Bridge is my nearest :)

I have used Octane booster in past cars which raises the ron rating by a few points and found it to increase torque and responsiveness, which I expect would be the same thing...
