My first golf vr6!

Recommended Posts

As a few of you may know i bought my first vr6 last week off a member on here.

Got the car home a the sills were alot worse than i thought and it was knocking from both sides.

I jacked the car up and spotted a snapped coilspring on the front drivers side, the passenger side is also knocking like fcuk aswel! So iv ordered a new set of coilovers and febi top mounts from oeandmore along with 2 new full sills.

The sills are rotted through at the jacking points but the rest is fine, so its booked in the bodyshop next week when the new sills arrive to fix the problem and ive asked him to have a more indepth look when on the ramp to see if thers anymore future problems.

So today these arrived ready to be fitted next week also with the bodywork, just waiting on the febi top mount kit.

Il keep you updated when the sills are getting sorted.

This is the car in its current form

The car is a 1997 3dr highline which was auto but has been professionaly converted to manual and has done 117k.

It has mk4 leather recaro interior(going to try and find a standard highline interior to go in)

It has a polished show cage..again im taking it out, so any1 who wants a cheap show cage and can collect then drop me a PM.

Its got genuine porsche d90 wheels

Got a 2.9 inlet manifold from a corrado

6 branch manifold with a serbring exhaust.

Rpower induction but will be getting changed for a bmc cda

All the electrics work but no aircon as he took it out so il be on the look out for a 2nd hand aircon unit to put back in.

Plans for the car are to make it as good as it can be, its pretty solid, but it does need a full detail which i will do as thats what my job used to be..will take about 2full days to do a proper job.

I like the wheels but i prefer something else that make the car stand out.

Change the hella quads and indicators to mk4 style crystal ones as i think the quads make it look dated, that saying i do like them but they also have a cracked lense, if i can buy one seperate then il hold out on the lights for a while.

I dont think il do any high performance mods as iv got my subaru for that. I was going to sell my scooby for around 6k and fund a nice turbo setup but i dont think i can justify the money when it still wouldnt be a patch on the subaru in the performance department..so this will be my little toy/cruiser/chill out car for when im going picking up the little lad or for when im going to training. But that saying...when does anybody keep their car standard when they say they are il keep you all updated as i go and hope for any input

Just got back from the bodyshop. Been quoted £300 a side to repair the sills. The work will consist of cutting out most of the sill up to the plastic kick plate and putting in the new sills that ive got from oeandmore. He went in depth and told me what he was going to do, sounded like a top job that probably was a little OTT but i like that kind..hes going to paint it afterwards, treat the fresh sill, pull up the carpets and get at it from inside aswel and treat it and repair if needed. He guaranteed that it will not even look like its been repaired..he explained that he couldnt just put the sill in were the stoneguard is as he couldnt tack it or something, but that includes sorting out the floor pan were it has been jacked up on the body and thers a hole so what do you guys think? Reaonable?

Its a little more than i expected. I expected around 200 per side. Might have to hold off for a while..600notes to pay out soon is alot emoji17.png

All I'll say is there old cars now and need work, had my VR near 3 years now and spent a ton of cash on it (my choice n wife not to thrilled)

My sills still need doing and I'm going to get round to having them done at the end of this season.

All I can say is if you're a bit unsure on his work/price? Just get him to do 1 side (the worst affected) just tell him monies tight at the mo, and if his work passes muster you'll get him to do the other side, that way he's got to get it spot on or you won't go back. Not only that, if its not perfect?

Don't pay until it is...

I was recommended off the bodyshop i use who taught him, so im guessing his work will be spot on! Pay cheap pay twice..but if it isnt a good job then he wont be getting paid anyways emoji4.png i only thought it was expensive because im providing the sills and he doesnt have to make his own

Fair point, but if the sills arn't genuine he'll probably have to work them/cut and shape them for a perfect fit non the less. Albeit after market stuff is good these days and better than it was 20 yrs ago, panels/wings etc still need work before they can be fitted/and or welded in.

So i went to the garage today to get it on the ramp to see what the knocking from both sides were, i knew it has a snapped coil spring but i knew there was more than that! Got it on the ramp and it need lower arms both sides as they are fcuked!, the exhaust it knocking on the rear arb, looks like a univeral exhaust or something as it doesnt look like a proper fit, the upper strut brace are held in by self tappers (whats the point?) And the power steering pipes are leaking...seems abit unfair from a guy i bought it from off here, so its all getting sorted tomorrow, god knows how much its going to cost. And its probably needs some gear and engine mounts as it goes into gear abit wierd and seems like the engine moves when changing gear and accelerating again!..starting to get fed up..might get it right and sell it on as thats how i feel, its already booked in next week to have the sills ammended..im booked on the stand at tatton aswel which will be a miricle if i make it

Chill Ash. Lol. Don't loose faith mate. Your a perfectionist pal so that's why your picking up on all the bits that need doing. In general you've got a good VR there mate because there's some serious rust buckets out there. You'll get there mate. I still spend money on mine upgrading shit and I probably will for years to come. But the miles will bring smiles when it's sorted.

I always get like this, its like im pouring money into it before i can start putting my own mods on. I just hope its ready for tatton as im looking forward to a great day and to get to see some of the members..if it doesnt cost too much il be happy lol. Not sure how much 2 lower arms cost? And how are they to fit? Aswel as fitting coilovers and power steering lines? The main thing thats done my head in is that if he would of mentioned it before i bought it i could of sorted it sooner....woosaah...i need to chill haha. Im sure i wont be to bothered once its done and its driving nice

  • 4 months later...

So as some of you may know i bought a 1997 highline in june and it needed some work! Well it needed 2 new full sills which i purchased from oeandmore. I finally got my arse in gear and sent it off to a bodyshop ive beem using for a while and he agreed to cut out all the rotted sills and replace them, aswel as repairing one of the drain hols with fresh metal that were abit krusty clown! Anyway cut a very long story short, the car ended up having a full repaint taking out and dings and blemishes! It ended up having a full repaint due to lack of communication for the people in the bodyshop, it was agreed that it would have a blow over to make it look fresh and so that any new paint wouldnt stand out agaisnt the old paint! Anyway, one of the lads in there thought he meant a full repaint, so it all got sanded back, primered and ready for a full hit, well as you can imagine the bosses reaction when he came in after the weekend off so he rang me to explain what had happened and said it will cost no extra as it wasnt my fault, but it will take longer than expected, so abit peed off that it was still going to be a while but happy it was getting a full hit said to him to just crack on as ive got my subaru sti to still drive about in, anyway it even took longer than he expected as his misses was very poorly for a while so he had to take time off regularly, and the boss being the only painted meant my car was on hold as he doesnt trust anybody else to paint it! Fair enough! He kept me updated on the situation but i was ok with it as its his misses and i would do the same.....

Anyway after 4 and a half months! The car was ready i was pretty excited to see the end product that i couldnt wait to finish work and go and pick it up....but as i was on a job that had to be finsihed that day at work meant that i couldnt make it down to his unit!! i told him that i couldnt make it and he said not to worry as he will drop it off for me that evening...what a guy!

So he finally got to my house with the golf and it looked like glass, it looked amazing under the street lights! I noticed that it had new hella quad light lenses in and my wheels were a shade darker and had been refurbed, i questioned him on it and he said it was a good will gesture as it had taken so long to complete and he said the lights and wheels looked out of place against the fresh paint! I was so shocked that he had done this for me and so i gave him a little extra than what he quoted me!

All in all im happy with the cars body work and the sills look very very good, they match the rest of the car as only half on each side needed doing and the work is invisable, no sign of a repair!

Now i can get on with the mechanical stuff as the cars playing up with sensors and running rich and cutting out, plus the gearbox need reconditioning which ive been quoted for already at a good price as its the father in laws good mate its who you know here are some picures from the work,

I must say the VR looks very very nice now with fresh paint etc. Had mine in for welding last week sadly (both sills and drivers side rear foot well) as failed its mot, I knew it was on the cards but didn't realise how bad it was until I had a look under the car with my mate (mot inspector) and she was pretty bad to say the least. Sent her to a guy I trust to do the welding and he kept sending me pictures of what he'd cut out saying "Ooh rat holes" then one he sent said "Elephant holes", funny bugger) Sadly though he didn't then give her a full respray mind, he just did what was needed to get her through mot so she could go back to have the mapping sorted out (needs to be done on the road now) so you did well there for sure. Still got a bit of rust needs sorting on her in the New Year and then a full repaint I think, and if she comes back looking as good as yours? I be well chuffed.
