evanfred 2
I recently bought a 99 vr6 and notice that when traveling on the highway the RPMs stay at 4000 despite me cruising in 5th gear. The person I bought it from didn't say anything about a new ECU so I am wondering if this in normal with the stock ECU. If not I would like to replace this one with the stock ECU to get some better fuel economy. Constant 4000 RMP isn't exactly a gas saver. Thanks alot
dave_424 48
ECU won't affect the cruising RPM's. To change that you would need to look at your gearbox and differential crown/pinion gears D11PS
evanfred 2
Ok thanks. Is that a normal thing then? for the RPMs to want to sit at 4000?
CALICO 130
Try putting it in 6th see if that helps. evanfred

dave_424 48
Calm down, I've got a 6th gear.... Do you mean that the RPM's are at 4000rpm when cruising, or that there is an electrical problem that is keeping the RPM needle at 4k even though you know the RPM's are changing? CALICO 130
Sorry I thought 99 vr6 were the mk4 and therefore had a 6th gear. Clearly you have no 6th gear or sense of humour lolMaybe if you posted exactly what car you had as I thought the mk3 finished in 98 and why like a post that clearly you hated? evanfred 2
Its a 1999 5 speed jetta VR6 (GLS I believe). I bought it used a few weeks ago.But what I'm saying is that at cruising speed (say 65mph or 70mph in 5th gear on the highway) the motor remains at 4000 rpm. I don't think it's a matter of the gauge being broken because I can hear how high it's revving. And I feel like that is a lot of strain on the motor. Especially when traveling like that for an hour or two.So that's why I wasn't sure about whether it was an ECU issue not.... But it makes sense what was said about the transmission gears being larger and requiring higher rpm to maintain that speed. It just seems strange that this problem even exists.Could a new tranny be the solution? This is my First Volkswagen and the first time I've experienced this so bear with me.Thanks for your help guys. mattvr6 133
Won't be ecu will be gearing, and i suggest if u want this forum to help you tell us exactly what car u have as there are many different vr6 variants between us and European models and don't call people fuckface! daveyboy
CALICO 130
Ok it would seam as if somebody has maybe put the wrong gearbox in your car or changed the final gear ratio for better acceleration. What speeds are achieved in other gears?
