Hello from essex UK :) new member , first vr6 build

I'd be abit careful Kell if you have filler in them. Have you thought about using some camber shims on it? And yeah I guess the iron bar trick is similar to the baseball bat trick. Funny some of them videos.

It's Not a lot just a thin layer to smooth it out after the rust was taken off and that ,

Yes I thought about that but not sure I want camber , as round here it's not very practical and I'm on 40 profile tires with stretch ? And she's my daily :/

Obviously in an ideal world of smooth roads , no potholes and no sleeping policeman speed bumps , id have camber all day everyday (one day ... One day ... Maybe When I get her looking so fit she becomes a show car ... (One day))

Quite possibly :) I'm still going to look just in case there's some fail videos

So I haven't posted on here in a while , she's been great untill recently when found out She had a head gasket prob , then it's just been one thing after another :(

Decided to go the whole hog and do timing chain , head gasket , stem seals , new clutch and replace all bottom end seals while I was at it , bills come in quite high and turns out I need a new head too due to negligence of previous owner , so she currently looks like this

Have you pressure tested the head? To see if it can be saved? Only asking as I do this for a living and I'm in process of buying a vr6 engine to rebuild for my project cabby. If the head is good you might be able to clean the valves and seats relap them and vacuum them see if you get a good reading

Garage did a series of tests and measurements on it and it's previously been skimmed and built up / what not and apparently it can't be done again as there's not enough on there to work with ?

Did you get the head sorted on this in the end

Yeah has to just swallow it and pay for a new one as they said old one was already skimmed and they refused to work on it again so didn't really have a choice , though apparently it now runs a higher compression ? And it's drinking fuel like a ...mf :/ even more than it did before it went in , but yeah she's sorted with the new head ,new timing chain kit , all new gaskets , bolts , uprated plugs , service, new thermostat and housing , clutch and ht leads and running a beaut :) and very thirsty beaut but still a beaut lol :) so much smoother now :)

And I'm still feeling the sting from the hefty bill though :/

Ouch. Well at least it done and running again I can't believe they refused to work on old head it would have been fine to use. I'm rebuilding a head for someone at min they had head gasket go

Yeah true and yes it was either buy a new one or the car stays there in pieces :( they wouldn't even give me my original one back either :/

There probably rebuilding it to sell

Exactly my thoughts on the matter which is down right cheeky because they could of rebuilt it for me for half what they charged me for the newer one if that's the case

Plus the new one has a higher compression which they said has bumped up my bhp ?? Which is why it's drinking so much fuel :/ like 16-20 miles to a quarter tank :/ for it booked in in the new year for some fuelling tests :/

Have they done a good vacuum test on it as it could leaking air

They were a tad vague on what they have and haven't done test wise , so I'll get them to do that when I bring it back in Jan , and I found it a tad odd that I don't have to bring it back in a few hundered miles to have the head bolts retorqued / checked which I always thought was mandatory :/

Hi,

You should try Mototechnic in Dunmow - which is a good family run garage.

They do all the work on my cars including the VR6 - the work on which included;

Front hub.

Front caliper, front pads.

Both rear wheel bearings.

Shocks and springs (twice!) plus top mounts.

Air con regas.

Auxilliary belt, pulleys etc (original disintegrated on the A120).

Front wishbones (chassis bolts had to be soaked for several days).

Diagnostics (airbag light, auto gearbox etc).

Tyre fitting.

So no major engine work, but as another poster said you would normally send the head away for refurbishment to a specialist once it is removed.

They also let me supply my own bits :-)

Cheers Pete

Thank you :) where abouts in dunmow are they ? The garage I used was in dunmow , DMS or dunmow motor services , and they let me supply my own parts too , just found them quite pricey

I'm not disagreeing that the head would have to be sent off I just didn't expect to be told "we can't work on your original head you need a new one" only for them to keep my original and apparently refurb it anyway to sell on , without asking me if I wanted it back considering my bill came in at over £1600 :(

Hi,

DMS have got good reviews. They are also the only local garage that does Terraclean.

The thing with the head sounds a bit strange. Did they get the new / reconditioned head on an exchange basis?

In which case you would have got a lot more than simply a skim, but nothing returned to you.

Anyhow, relationships with garages work on trust, so perhaps it is time to move on.

Mototechnic are on the Chelmsford Road industrial estate. From DMS head out of town over the bridge then after the mini-roundabout it's the first Industrial estate on the left (with Taylors on the corner).

Yeah any other job they all been really good with :)

The new head was completely new and cast for me , they just fitted extra bits off my old one to the new one , guides and valves and what not and apparently outside company never sent my head back ?
It wasn't a skim at all , as said further up my original head had already been skimmed and they refused to work on it anymore hence needing new one , I guess I'm just feeling a bit butt hurt over the price and how long it was delayed for (repeatedly)

And yes true , ah ok I know which industrial est you mean , I'll have a look in to them :) thank you
