Clutch fast tapping on full pedal release!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Hopefully someone can help me on this one.

Whilst driving to work this morning, I noticed a fast tapping noise in the engine bay (nearside I think) everytime time the clutch pedal was fully released. I have noticed recently that acceleration in low gears has been somewhat laboured/delayed!

I have no problem changing gear and the clutch seems ok otherwise. This sound is pretty loud (pedestrian reactions a giveaway) everytime I fully released the pedal. I spent the whole drive home with my foot slightly on the clutch pedal which I'm sure won't do me any favours in the long run.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! I'm hoping the fix won't be too expensive as wheelarch rust is really starting to take hold but mechanically, the car has really been looked after and a big expense may force my hand (sorry)

Cheers

Cheers for the reply VR6Pete.

Think you're right with the slipping suggestion. Took it to work and back yesterday, thankfully got home as the clutch is now almost none existent and gear change is a real struggle!

I've done a bit of searching and sounds like it might be the clutch release bearing which is knackered. So I'm now looking at replacing the clutch, problem is the two quotes I got are £300 clutch + 4 hours labour (£320) at VW dealers or £550(ish) all in from independent specialist!

I've seen a Sachs clutch kit which I think would be a good bet at various places online for between £100-150. Does anyone have any experience of this kit and also, is a clutch change something I should consider doing myself or is it likely to give me a headache - difficult to say I know but just looking for advice really?

Same thing's happened on mine about 2 weeks ago after a bit more research I'm led to believe its the Input Shaft Bearing inside the box itself ??

I could be wrong though I hope ' date='

Does it sound anything like this :

Not heard it for a while but from memory, that sound is very, very familiar.....oh s@#t!

From more research in to Release Bearing and Input Shaft Bearing issues (much appreciated input!), it certainly does look the more likely cause doesn't it. The car needs to be running well very soon so I'm going to let the dealers loose on it and see what they come back with, should give some good insight (but also obliterate my savings 8-) )

I'll try and get a recording of the noise from mine and let everyone know what the outcome is from the dealers, diagnosis, costs, etc.
