ThermalP4 1
Hi Guys.As I have been driving around for the last few days with no stereo as i'm upgrading so removed the old stuff I noticed a noise from inside the car which was worse at around 1100rkpm.Checked it out and took it to local specialist who diagnosed as possibly chains without opening it up.Having read around I decided to buy a new tensioner bolt as this has sometimes been the issue for others and is quite a straight forward thing to try.Earlier today I removed the old tensioner bolt after the car had been standing for a few days and went to fit the new one. I noticed that Eurocarparts had sent me the old revision bolt and even though it came in a genuine VW bag it was the "A" revision where as the one that came off the car was a "B" revision hence the later design.Decided not to fit and put the old one back in.Started the engine and notice there was no rattle. Manually operated the throttle under the bonnet so I could listen closely to the chains and there was hardly any noise apart form the normal operation sound.Left the car running for 5 mins and still no chain rattle. After about 8-10 mins I slowly start to hear the noise coming back.Manually operated the throttle again and sure enough the chain rattle was coming directly from the tensioner bolt area under the cover, clear as day.Surely if the chains or guides were shot then the chain would rattle straight away?Could it be the tensioner is not getting enough pressure hence oil pressure is down?Car is a 1997 model with 74k on the clock with full history.Any ideas? Thanks. vr6turbo 27
could be the tensioner is worn there is a seal inside which may be worn the thinner hotter oil is working its way past the sealjust a thought i repaired one a week ago the chains had jumped 2 teeth on the exhaust cam,and dicovered the seal on the tensioner had worn i had a second hand half with the seal in good nick . Then bled the tensioner down refitted it and the car was spot onits got 211k on the clock the highest i have ever seen
ThermalP4 1
I'm wondering if I could fit the new one I got from eurocarparts even though its an older revision?
Daverse 175
You could do, but if its the earlier one it wont have a spring in it so you have to properly bleed it
