Age old question maybe?... how much power to get keeping n/a?

I may be asking an age-old question and might not even get an answer due to every rolling road being different etc. but just want to get an idea of whats the most power that can be squeezed out of the vr6 lump while keeping it naturally aspirated??

I have a 2.8 OBDI in a mkII Golf and have started off with the Corrado 2.9 throttle body & inlet, 6 branch manifold (questionable i know) Induction kit and de-cat system.

A set of lairy/268 cams would be next and some head work but what bhp could i expect from the OBDI after that?

what would then be the next step OR is there any other minor tweeks that can be done?

A guy in Sweden did the following in2009 to his n/a 12V :

Woessner 83.5mm 11:5 cr with Woessner rods. New bearings all over. Blue printed and ported head with Schrick big valves, Schrick 272 cams, Schrick springs and titanium retainers. Schrick VSR, Supersprint 6 branch with complete 2,75inch exhaust. All this controled by DTA Pro 80 standalone.

It did 218whp on a Rototest......

I wasted a lot of momey myself from 2000-2005, before i went forced induction. A used supercharger kit isnt that expensive. Or even pieceing your own turbo kit....

Would I be right in saying if ur staying na then don't think engine mods so much as, gearbox good suspension engine mounts etc etc. Id have thought all of this is goin to make a lot more differance that trying to squeeze 20bhp more out of the engine? I would however shell out on a schrick if I had the money just to show off at shows hehe

Can I ask why, considering the £££ per bhp, you want to stay N/A?

Cams, chip, head work, pistons etc. etc. etc. are all good in themselves, but in total you're going to get 220bhp max. That's a lot of work and a lot of money for not a lot more power, all things considered.

A slum-dog turbo conversion might set you back as little as £1000-1500, and offers far greater performance gains, with the option of further power gains which can be done incrementally as your budget / time allows.

Once you start talking about pistons etc. you may as well whack a massive turbo in and aim for 500bhp+. (In my humble opinion).

I'm not criticizing the intention (I'm genuinely interested to know how far you can push an N/A), but if you can reach 190bhp with a fairly simple re-map, exhaust and intake - why spend over a grand hunting for another 20bhp?

to be honest i just like the vr6 as a naturally aspirated engine, thats one of the appeals that really got me to like it, its power delivery and sound,

I've previously owned a lot of turbo cars from Escort RST to R5GTT to S13 Nissan 200sx's but i've enjoyed the vr6 the most - in the shape of a mk3 1st, then a 'rado and now my mkII :-)

If i was to go down the whole turbo route then i know myself too well, there would be the bigger injectors, bigger turbo, mapping bladey blah... i have no interest in that, just wanted to get an idea of what power is the max for n/a which i've now got from the responses.

I will have to let you know how n/a route goes. I'm just waiting to get my vr back next week. I'm getting tsr pack c head, 264 cams, metal head gasket and filter, already have 6 branch manifold, decat and miltek exhaust, and all cost me under 700 :) so when I send it off for a remap I will let you know
