Golf Mk4 4Motion Power Steering Pipe Rubbing on Flywheels :(

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

I noticed the power steering, return pipe (?) which comes from the back of the reservoir and runs down past the side of the engine, well that was rubbing in TWO places on TWO seperate flywheels and it had begun to cut through the metal pipe and caused a leak :(

Have any of you ever experienced this ?

It was in a garage over last few weeks for alternator work so Im thinking they reassembled it wrong :(

Any info would be much appreciated

Tony

Also what can I use to clean up the mess it made around the engine bay once I get the little leak sorted on Friday?

And could it do any damage if im topping it with oil and running it like this? Although I have undone the braket and the pipe is no longer touching the flywheels

There are clips on mine to keep the pipe up and away and fully secured so I would heve thought it wasn't back together properly. A lot of stuff is moved around to get to the alternater including the aux belt tensioner and other bits around the power steering to get to the bolts. I'd be going back for an explanation and let them clean it.

Thanks m8. Problem is m8 the warranty ran out few days back :( Does any1 know if there is action I can take against this garage that sold me and did the repairs to my car ? Cowboys! Let me know, thanks. Tony

Bungy, the clip that holds it in place? If you look at your 4Mo, The power steering reservoir, then the pipe that comes off the back of the reservoir nearest the windscreen for eg ( i think this is a low pressure return?) ok that pipe is plastic and joins into the metal pipe which runs down past the side of the engine. well its the metal bits that had rubber on the flywheels and cut through :( As the pipe turns to the metal pipe, there is a 13mm (aprox) nut holding the thing to the engine block, do you have a spacer between the bracket and the engine block,? coz mine was tight to the engine block, hence rubbing on the flywheels :(

most garages have parts and labour guarantee, and if you know that they messed about with the part that is now a problem then i cant see them being able to weasel out of it easily? are they part of a good garage scheme or anything too cos if they werent obliging you could use this kind of thing as ammunition if need be too.

In my experience a good approach is to know full well what they have done and what has happened and to be nice about it not red rag to a bull, If you dont know what youre talking about they could see the chance to bullsh1t you and if you are arsy about it they ll just shut down on you.

Most garages who are not cowboys would sort you out though.

For example my bro had his clio 172 in for a cambelt at an independent renault sport specialist and on the way home the undertray fell off and scraped away to nothing on the road, i know for a fact that it was on fine before this as id changed his oil for him and torqued the bolts myself a week before, he called them up and (nicely not arsy) told them what happened, they ordered a new undertray for him that day.

My apologies mate as this had slipped my mind but I saw your reminder and went and had a look. I took a photo of what I think you are asking.

I remember double checking this when I rebuilt the top end and this is exactly as the Bentley manual shows aswell. I bet they had a nut left over when they rebuilt yours. A very dangerous one to leave out IMO. I checked and re-checked mine until I had nothing left over after the re-build.
