Shes back from VW.... List of faults

Recommended Posts

Im well chuffed...!

| bought the car blind on Saturday for £1400 and immdeiatly gave her a mega clean then had the tracking, balancing and 2 new tyres fitted on Monday.

Today she has been in at Martins VW in Basingstoke and they have informed me that my 1997 Rreg Vr6 Highline has the following problems:

Play in the Steering rack, needs replacing.

Needs new gearbox bearing

Clutch running low

Oil leak from the sump

Drivers window motor

Rear passenger window regulator

Heated seats inoperable need stripping to find fault

No car stereo!!!

Grill VR6 badge missing

Rear VR6 badge missing

Warning triangle missing

Wheel brace missing

Screwdriver missing

If thats all they can find wrong with her after 13 years and 105k miles, plus I bought her blind, then I have to say my dream of owning a VR6 is getting better & better. Im well chuffed with those results.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can keep the cost down and get these issue resolved/repaired please????

All parts donations greatly received

Im in the Basingstoke area...!

Thanks Comrades your help is really appreciated. Bloody Awesome news!

Birchy

Thats fairly good then to be honest... the last 6 things you can ignore really, unless you want them....

as for rest it is all quite expected really... if you're wanting to do the clutch, gearbox and steering rack then have a word with Tony... he's great and he'll sort you out for a good price... also this is the point you really want to become a premium member.... you get discounts off loads!!

If Kent isnt too far for you i would say get Tony to sort you out with fitting your bits, and if you're a premium member you will save between 10 and 40% on some of the bits you need from our suppliers. :)

I couldnt believe they listed the stereo as 'missing' it did make me chuckle.

Can get a brand new steering rack for £150, anyone have an idea as to how much it will cost to get it fitted please?

VW want £205 to fit a new passneger window regulator and a stonking £395 for the new drivers window motor.

Thanks for the tip will check out ebay and also speak with Tony to get his feel on things.

Im a bit OCD and want her as close to factory as possible so will get the missing tool kit pieces and badges.

You may struggle with badges as they are obsolete... i have ways of getting these things though... so if you struggle then let me know and ill try my contacts... ;)

VW are ridiculous prices... in my experience with my local dealers is that it tends to be 17 year old bell ends working in there that are too busy play fighting for my liking, so i find it off putting knowing they will be out of sight fiddling with my car... i prefer to go to vw/audi specialists, or i use Tony. The care taken is a lot better by people who actually are into the dub scene... this i have seen and im very particular about who touches mine now. more money doesnt always equal better workmanship.

But i ob dont know your local dealer, just speaking from my own experience... :)

You really should become a premium member, the discount you would get on the steering rack alone will get you your money back... but i cant give out discount details unless you're premium im afraid.

Thanks VR6 Nat.

I will become a premium member when I get some spare cash. All funds are taken up buying the car and getting it sorted.

I will hold off the repairs until I become a premium member. If the discounts are as good as you say it will save me a tidy sum and earn me some brownie points with the wife. I think she is sick of VR6 conversations already!

Haha, thats fine mate... i will get onto the guys i know in the meantime and try and get you some decent prices on the little bits and pieces... then when you're ready just give me a shout and ill try and help you get the cheapest price possible for the best parts... :)

And you should get along to some shows... then you can talk about VRs till your blue in the face and not bore us... i think i bore my boyfriend sometimes... but that's what happens when you get sucked into the dub life... there's no easy escape, but its great!! :) :)

Brilliant, thanks again VR6 Nat.

PM me when you get any information and we can discuss further. Really appreciate your help!

Ive been in touch with the south west VR6 team and am waiting on some meeting dates but will defiantly get along to shows and pick some brains and hopefully some bargain buys on parts.

My two boys keep wanting to go for a drive as its 'really fast', I have to tell them to keep it down or they will get Daddy in trouble with mummy!

I feel like Im 18 again rebuilding my MK1 GTi...

Bloody brilliant... Think you could say Im hooked...!

Hahaha... thats great... you should def head up to the pod in the summer then.. its great fun!! I went to my first show on my own and everyone was so welcoming... the weekenders are the best... :)

As soon as i get an email back i will let you know... and just for your info Tony is normally online in the evenings as he's at work in the day and cant get online so if you pm him for any info on getting bits done he will only be able to get back to you that evening. :)

Just collected the car and sat with service receptionist, who is brilliant, talking about pricing for the repairs, all include VAT & fitting, see below:

Near Side Rear Regulator - £205.41

Off Side Front Window Motor - £395.46

Steering Rack - £1015.46

Inner Off Side CV Boot - £121.61

4x Alloy Wheel Refurb - £160.00

Paint Front & Rear bumpers, touch up stone chips and other body marks - £250.00

Im taking her to a VW speacialist tomorrow for them to check her over and give an opnion on repairs as two sets of eyes are better than one. Plus, I feel a Specialist will have more attention to detail as they are as picky as me...!

Other than the steering rack, the cost doesnt seem that bad to me. What do you think of the prices?

Cheers,

Birchy

I have a rule of thumb - NEVER go to get work done by VW because you can always get it done cheaper elsewhere. At the end of the day you get the same thing done.

But then again, i wouldn't pay £200-300 for window regulators/motors. It just isnt worth it. I got my used window motor from ebay 2 years ago and its still going strong. It is partially luck though. If you want brand new ones, i would check prices from places like euro car parts, car spares etc.

I only go to VW for engine/service parts.

Thanks guys, I will have a look on google for local VW specialists and get them to fit genuine VW parts for the repairs.

Body work, as expected the car has a few bumps and scrapes. Can anyone recommend a decent body shop in Hampshire please?

About those badges, I hunted high and low, phoned pretty much every VW parts and their suppliers looking for new badges for mine, nothing, nada. might save you some time before you start trying to find some. Unless you want to pay some greek bugger £100 a badge!

"Play in the Steering rack' date=' needs replacing."

I think I need a new rack as well, anybody know the damage for the part and fitting?

Cheers!

is the play in the actual rack or the ballends of the track rods? lot cheaper to replace than the whole rack.

NowVR6, booked it in with them for tomorrow so thanks for the info.

Im going to call Euro Car Parts tomorrow and ask for a quote on all the parts I need.

As for the steering rack, Im not convinced it needs replacing. I asked them to look into why the car pulls to the left (tracking, balance etc complete monday) and they came back with 'worn steering rack'. Hopefully The Phirm will be able to advise differently.

Hmmmm just read all the way through this thread, first off i have to echo some peoples comments, absolute madness to use vw main dealers, infact not just vw, anyone using any main dealer its suicide, lol money hand over fist, especially for fitting etc. If in fact the jobs actually get done(not saying all main dealers are like that but i wouldnt like to go to the expense to find out the good en's).lol Noticed your pull to the left which is what im experiencingplus a knock on one side on full lock, off the top of my head i thought wishbones, maybe replace drop links to, some others have added to my thread saying poss cv joint, could be engine mounts. Id be inclined to try vr6stormt advice frst with the ball ends. But if its booked into someone who knows their stuff they will find the prob im sure! good luck. Infact when you find out the prob with the pull to left can you give me a shout!? thanks!!

'The Phirm' are superb...!

Spent an hour with them on friday looking over my new girl and boy are they particular, which is a good thing as so am I.

The list from VW wasnt that bad, I coped when I first saw it as she is 13 years old in September. However, The Phirm found another 14 items that need attention which is great as it means when all the mechanical work is complete she will be tip top.

I cant recommend 'The Phirm' enough. Ultra friendly, Ultra Knowledgable, Ultra good at what they do...!

Use them people... I will be!
