Timing chain?

Recommended Posts

After having all cars with cam belts they dont take long to change now im onto chain.

Had a shock when phoning V.W they wont just under £2000.

My car is on 167000 cant hear the chain knocking but cant see any paper work from new of when it was last done.

Im from Essex area anyone know anyone who dose the work cheaper then V.W can get parts myself if that helps.

Regards Subby

As far as i know' date=' since u don't notice any strange noise, no need to worry about the chain .....

At ~160k my chains where silent. However the portion of the tensioner which usually cause the rattle - the rivets - had worn right away. This was the top tensioner which can be checked without 'too much' effort. there's a how to somewhere

VWs costing is all in the labour. Even so £2K seems steep. I got quoted £1100. An independent will do it for between £500 and £700 And a full guide to doing chains in the premium members section ;-)

Agree with the above.. my vr wasn't rattling but when i did the rebuild i found that the tensioner had worn down and the metal rivets holding the wear surface were in the oil pickup pipe and the guie rail had snapped.

i have also recently stripped a friends rado vr and that had the same problems.

have a phone around to find a good specialist, at the end of the day 1, you know the engine is good for another 100k or so, and 2, i would drive a couple of hundred miles to get it done knowing that im saving 1500 quid instead of going to vw.

something like this: http://www.vr6oc.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?123337.post

you can see where it came off, move and the chains started to make new tracks!

also realised that the checking guide is premium member content as well. but basically 'only' involves removing the inlet manifold and cam cover.
