mcpherson struts are just normal struts, just the name of the style of suspension, named after the bloke from plymouth who invented them

I bought my new top mounts from gsf, they arent much, but make sure you replace the bearings and that aswell and the tracking and geometry re-aligned when fitted

All theadvice I've seen says don't buy aftermarket, buy proper OEM top mount bushes from VW. I recently bought a pair, inc bearings, and they cost £35.00 inc. VAT. Probably about £20 for non VW from GSF? Apparently not worth the saving as they wear out much more quickly.

Also I've discovered that an experienced VW mechanic can change them both in under an hour. The 'stock' time quoted by VW is I think 3.5 hours. The 3.5 hours assumes the strut will be dismantled and removed completely. In reality the job can be done by disconnecting the top attachement and pushing the wishbone down as far as possible so you can get your hand in at the top to change the bush and bearing!
