Need to save money on a service!

Recommended Posts

My new VR needs a service and I'm trying to keep the cost down, how do I drop the oil to replace it as it really does need it? I know on some cars there is just a nut you undo and it drops out, is this the case with the VR? Also does anyone know what size socket is needed to change spark plugs? Any info on money saving ideas while servicing the car would be appreciated!

Cheers

Jack up the passenger side a little as the sump drain is ofset to the drivers side so it will help drain it, Drain the oil then you need to take the centre nut out from under the oil filter housing to drain the filter, then a large (i think its 26mm) socket to get the actual housing off.

Plugs - GSF do the proper socket (16mm i think) with magnets inside for getting the plugs out, and you will need and ht lead puller aswell

5.5 litres of synta silver / fuchs oil and a new copper sump washer, Id also recommend and ECS sump plug from awesome gti aswell and for the price a genuine VW oil filter

Will any old garage be able to get hold of genuine dub parts? Is it alot better to run it on genuine dub parts aswell? This is the first car I've had that I wanna take care of her so I'mm planning on spending that valuable bit of extra cash to make her purr but not bankrupt myself! e.g this will be the first time in 4 years of driving experience where I have actually serviced a car!! To be fair the last 2 were an Escort and an Astra :-S

Main dealer genuine filter is only about £3 more, vw synta silver oil is about £21 for 5 ltrs from main dealer, genuine parts do seem to be better for not much more £.

Id take a quick spin into Exeter to get one from Mann Egerton VW
