2000X Golf IV V6 4Motion (Highline) has lost 36bhp???

Recommended Posts

Hi, new to this stuff. I thought my V6 wasn't as powerful as it should be. I had a rolling road test carried out today and guess what? The standard bhp should be 204bhp mine came out at 165.3bhp. The tester told me that this is very bad as most cars do lose a bit of bhp but not as much as 36bhp!!!

He told me everything else was ok e.g the fuel and the torque. The figures as follows:

CONNECTED POWER 172.9BHP

ENGINE POWER 165.3BHP

WHEEL POWER 101.0 BHP

DRAG POWER 64.3 BHP

MAX. POWER at 5175RPM

TORQUE 256.9Nm

Does anybody else have this issue? Are VW lying about the power of the V6 or is my car just weird? The tester did not know what the issue could be. Does anyone know of any checks or fixes?

Thanks

101 bhp at the wheels is terrible mate stock 12v vrs make around 140-145 atw even taking your higher transmission loss into consideration that gives about 125 bhp corrected!!!!!

4wd lose around 25% of the power i dont know where they came up with 60% tranny loss!!!

i found it weird that the tester let go of the acclleration early (1st time i've had it done so i didn't bother asking too many q's) - he also had 2 of us sit in the back as he had a prob with the rear offside wheel?? - i did a run and found that my rpm does go upto 6500-7000 before it tops out (mind that it was only in 2nd due to the space i had!!! - think i need a motorway!!!)

Get another rolling road test done - ideally at Stealth - you can temporarily make the haldex 4wd system 2wd and get a rolling road session done at 2wd garages. Vince, the owner will know how to do this. It is nororiously difficult to get good power readings from the wheels of haldex system cars because of the way power is distributed via the system. I read an article about this. Might get a much better power reading if the haldex is temporarily switched to 2wd. Stealth's rolling road is the most widely used amongst us vr6 owners.

If it wasn't a faulty rolling road session then it could be a faulty hall/cam sensor - this can lead to big flat spots in power up to 30bhp, so could be a cause. Did the garage who did your rolling road session not come up with any faults, or did they not have it hooked up to vag com while they did it? Best bet is to speak to a specialist like stealth racing who will diagnose and sort it out. Cam sensor is very quick and easy to replace so will be a cheap remedy. Good luck
