didnt liek these comments:

'I agree the 8V and 16V Gtis had very tough engines. Not so the VR6. '

'I'd avoid the MkIII like the plague - VW took a wrong turn with it'

Some people think they know VWs and actaully they know naff all, i wouldnt comment on cars i know nothing about

or they could always look on our streets to see how many "old" VW`s are around 20 or even 40 years after they were originally built! dont see too many old Renaults or Hondas do ya? thats because they are foooooooooking shiiiiiiiiite! the Germans know how to build a car properly plain and simple, if they cant see that then who cares what they think, i will still be admiring mine and other peoples dubs for the next xxxxx years, how many people are gonna stand around a shitty old jap or French car? it will be a pile of bits in 10 years maximum!

what a bunch of idiots.....

they obviously don't have a clue about the VR's as this comment from that site proves!

From what I have heard these early VR6 engines have a single row timing chain which MUST be changed at 100,000 miles or it snaps soon after and bye bye engine! The later ones are fitted with a "duplex" (twin) chains which last forever.

========

No, early VR's had a double top chain, and it MUST be changed??? *cough* bullshit *cough*

:) a lot of them are blinkered when it comes to Vdubs, i find a lot just think "beetle" "air cooled" or "GTI" not allowing for all the variations, the general feeling i get when i tell people im into my Dubs is varied, people with Fords or Jap cars really do seem very jealous of the Dub scene`s huge following and the VW brands cult status, but then immitation IS the greatest form of flattery! ;)

I seem to remember you arguing in another thread that you should get the chains done at 100,000!!

Anyway although some comments on there are harsh and show a lack of knowledge on the subject the comments on here are equally blinkered... I love the VR and the mk3 in general but if you're talking about unmodified hot hatches it wont exactly go down in history as one of the greats will it ;)

They are great value at the moment but that one does look a bit of a shed to be fair

none last longer than any other! depends on the individual car mate, later engines did have "improved" set up but that dont mean it wont bust if abused mileage means nothing either really as if something fails it fails!, people always mention the water pump, head gaskets and chains when you say VR6, in the 3 years i worked for VW i never once ordered a head gasket or chains for a vr! water pumps yeah but thats a "service" part anyway imo and they go on every car at some point, and besides at least we dont have to import stuff from japan to keep a fragile expensive to run tin pot motor on the road eh? Honda type aRse can kiss my ar5e ;) and eat my German exhaust fumes!

I'd advise to get them done, but what he is saying is that they will snap soon after 100,000.

I liked:

The VR is based on a diesel so the bottom end is pretty strong. I heard it's fairly easy to get a 24v head on too!

WTF?!?

There are some pretty sheddy VRs out there, to be fair, but given the choice between a 150,000 mile 1994 VR6 and a mk3 Astra GSi, mk5 Escort 16V or Renault 19 16V of the same age and mileage, I know which one I'd trust most on a long journey...
