Towing my car saturday morning.(drove it actually)

Recommended Posts

Well, my car finally gave up. and its parked miles away from home, getting her towed back with my g/f's step dad at 7.30am %-6 lol.

I was just driving along steadily, dropping the g/f off, bout 40 mph. the car starts bucking, and was very unresponsive, then cut out on me. so i pulled over, and checked petrol. (just put £10 in about 1 hour before going out so not the problem). Tried to start it again no luck, just turns over. so i got out and popped the bonnet. tried her again and weyhey, she was running. Idled for about 30 secs, then hunted and cut out. ggrrrr. (girlfriend started to see my angry side here)

I had a look about in the bay, checked the leads, fuel pressure regulator and pipes, maf sensor. all connections good. couldnt see any faults. Any ideas so far?

well ive came to the conclution that shes either getting no spark, or no fuel. im thinking its either a fkd ignition transformer, fkd fuel pump or fuel filter is clogged. I have some new beru leads to go in so ill see if its that. doubt it tho.

i know its been asked a million times B4 but, any ideas ppl?

Ok so i picked her up about 20 mins ago, she started first time, and idled at about 1000 revs, so i thought drive her home. (my g/f's step dad followed in case it died again) anyway, got home fine, altho she started hunting about 1 min away from my house so i just kept it at about 2500 revs in 3rd. then she cut out when i backed off coming onto the drive.

so now im thinking it cant be spark, so it must be fuel or air. so its either a dodgy fuel filter, dodgy maf, or the car is just fkd and need scrapping.

any suggestions on this?

well ive been out and changed the fuel filter as a friend had a spare one he was going to fit, but has now sold his vr. and it isnt fuel related.

the car starts and idles fine for about 2 minutes, using the ISV to run at 1000 rpm, then once it drops to normal idle, it just cuts out. so would this be my MAF? or could it be the O2 sensor in the exhaust? any more suggestions appreciated. thanks so far.

andrew - i am away on my holidays on tuesday, so just going to leave the car off the road till i get home, then buy a vag com for myself. thanks for the suggestion, but i just couldnt justify paying money to diagnose it when i can get a vag com for myself. lol.

see' date=' this is the prob with vr6's...theres too many things that can cause the same symptoms.

diagnostics is the only simple way :([/quote']

He's right, you know :D

Thers so much to "Guess" from that speculation doesn't really help...just fuddles things up a little...I have to confess, as an after thought, it does sound like the MAF. Is the bullet box properly connected to it?? just checking before your wallet takes a beatin' &|

"Mad Doodah" has a good Idea though...... seeing as its a hot air needle type MAF, have a look in the MAF for the needle, you should see it quite clearly....if its not there sandwiched between two "V" shaped supports.... try that fur a looksee :D

ok, so ive had a change of thought on this. as it first cut out on friday, and we had a massive downpour on thursday up my way, and had to drive through some puddles. (in a slammed car, not good) ive decided it may have been to do with the damp. and it has been running today for a good 30 miles with no probs, then it rains as im going to drop my g/f off and it wont even fire up. poo. any suggestions on damp problems? remembering its OBD1 (do they have a coil?)

well, yours is a dizzy obd1...so i'd say yep it does have a coil (follow the ht laed that doesn't go to the plugs ; ) ), but it could be a fair few things, does sound like water penetration though...gotta work out where now.

  • 3 weeks later...

ok, so heres an update on my nightmare. the car actually kept cutting out in the dry after a while. then when i arrived home from cyprus last week, the battery had gone flat from my dad starting it and it not recharging due to it cutting out after a few mins.

after jumping the car off and changing the plugs/leads (as i had them laying around) the car started, ran for a minute or so, then cut out again.

now with the battery recharged i tried it again and nothing, it turns over, just wont start. so now im completely baffled.

I also cant get anyone to read the fault codes because they all say its the flashy light thing and they dont have the equipment. anyway. i have a mechanic coming round tomorrow afternoon to have a look. but i was wondering if anyone had any more ideas on this. the car was totally dry today, and has been for 2 days. so im ruling out water penetration. (ooh err). how can i test the coil, what voltage should be at the pins of the connector? and can i just hold a spark plug to the engine and crank her over?
