The book says 174BHP.

Highlines are supposedly more like 190, not sure if that can be said of all OBD2 engines.

Get yourself along to the next VR6OC rolling road day to find out for sure ;-)

P.S. First hint: If it's still on standard shocks, get them changed for some that don't wallow so much.

174 is the figure for the earlier OBD1's. All OBD2's, (whether Highlines or standard) come with approx 185-190bhp on average. I believe mid 95 was when the OBD2's came in so your's could be either mate. Makes no difference whether you have a highline or standard model mate... both have same engine. There should be a pic in the guide on this forum that shows the engine bay of an OBD1 and OBD2. That will help you tell the difference straight away.

If it has the OBD1 throttle body then it sounds as though it is the OBD1 model. All models should have abs... but the original owner may have put the larger disks on as an extra option perhaps. You can easily gain the power of the OBD2 by a remap and enlarged throttle body butterfly. Should see you with 190ish bhp.

It's the throttle body which is the given.

Retro fitting larger brakes is common but doesn't normally involve changing the abs pump/controller.

But being an 'N' it'll be on the cusp, and made out of whatever VW had in stock. I have heard of an early highline with square repeaters!

AS OBD specifically refers to the engine management yours does sound like OBD1.

How many owners has it had? Could the guy who sold it to you have been miss informed? Like a gane of chinese whispers.
