martingraham 21
Hi, how do I fix a seized engine? It had a massive oil Leak then seized up. I should be getting a replacement soon, but I also want to try to salvage and fix this one. What are my options?

martingraham 21
Anything in particular I should be paying close attention to
CALICO 130
Generally if an engine has seized due to lack of oil its because the bearings have welded themselves up IE: big end bearings so you may need a new crankshaft if its damaged the bores then it will need a rebore. Seriuosly not worth doing better of getting a cheap second hand lump and rebuilding that. martingraham
martingraham 21
I thought just as much so I have a second lump coming soon. But also I tried to confirm today that it was seized and I managed to turn it over by hand. So not sure what is wrong with it. I'll get the second lump built and in then start on the busted one. CALICO 130
Maybe it overheated and seized through expansion so when it cooled down it unseized but expect some bearing damage.
martingraham 21
Well, I got the front off today and from what I can see of the block it looks in a crapy state. Hopefully have a new one arriving soon.
ClintonB 0
Also remember to fix what might have caused the overheat/seize. Normally the fan motor controller is at fault or fans first stage resistor packs. As the main fan only engages when hot, it can't coupe and the head gasket could go.Do you have a blown head gasket? or has the oil drained from sump (crack in sump is common on lowered vehicles)? martingraham 21
Not sure what it was. I now have a replacement engine that needs building up and dropping in.
ClintonB 0
Check your auxillary water pump and internal water pump. The water circulation together with the fans not performing as required would cause issues. the engines traditionally are pretty tuff and as long as they have been serviced on a regular basis shouldn't give any trouble. But then as you say there are many things that could cause a seize (even something as simple as chain and followers).Good luck with getting this sorted.
