Hi everyone,

I have the opportunity to buy a golf VR6..

For the huge price of, 150€ I could probably get it even cheaper, it's an R reg 5 door in black. RHD

I live in Germany currently but moving to Stafford around July/August time..

Originally from South East London. I've had a look at insurance quotes and that is the only thing that is putting me off.. 3 grand!!! Being 22years Young is not helping!

I believe there is an immobiliser issue that comes and goes, had paperwork and 3 keys included, also the rear passenger window mechanism is shot however that is something that could be repaired. Seeing as I'm in Germany there is plenty of places I can go for spares so I'm not bothered about that at all..

So what do you all think, go for it or not?

Hi everyone,

After being a complete noob and a bit of a lurker

I now have the keys for the above car! It didn't cost me a penny! So no losses so far!

Only problem is I cannot start it, it has a cobra immobiliser/alarm fitted to it. I believe it is this that is making the car not start and would like to take it out if I can..

Any ideas where to start?

The engine doesn't turn over, can't hear the fuel pump, nothing. The only thing I could hear is when you try to start it there is a slight hum coming from the bay, this is a picture of the paperwork I have for the alarm.. e1b482882607e52c2d99dfe279c5006a.jpg

This is a wire that was randomly in the bay taped up to 3 black wires..

They are the 3 cables that the lone cable was taped to.. Apparently this was cut to stop the alarm sounding, where the 3 black cables are supposed to go to im not sure exactly.

hi mate, the wire is probably to the siren (if it has one) and there would also be a bonnet trigger (little plunger on front panel) for the alarm as well. i have found this link that has the wiring diagram

what numbers are the red and white wires hiding? 3?9?

from the diagram the green wire on the mono block looks like its the engine stop you will need to bridge this possibly to the 12V in. I'm sorry im not an alarm fitter ;-)

the only other way will be to follow the monoblock wires to the original loom and reinstate.

apparently these models have trouble and need re-synching occasionally so i would check that first before chopping wires.

to reprogram keys you need the PIN, i would take the serial number and email for PIN (Cobra is now Vodafone automotive,

the humming is likely to be the secondary water pump which means with the dash lights that you have ignition power.

Sorry no I don't have the pin for it, manual says the default pin is 1111 tried this no luck, tried changing pin but no luck also.

Thanks for the wiring diagram..

The White cable does go to the plunger on the bonnet your right there..

I will have a go at bridging the wires across and see what happens.

Need to get this sorted before can think about future modifications.

*UPDATE*

Right so I spent an hour on the car this morning and managed to remove this.. 2b906cf123f11f8b3e38da8e34dda05b.jpg

After Removing the cobra alarm from the cables behind the fuse box I have managed to start the car twice! So there is definitely progress there. However I can't get it started again!!

One cable I ant find where it should go to, it was just hanging loose behind the fuse box, any ideas what this could be? 5c5e3a393b8c65e1ba1ed2b7a4fa881c.jpg

Also after removing all of the cables in the first picture, when the lights are turnt on, relay 36 is constantly buzzing. Could this just be a warning to the driver or is this a separate issue that will need seeing to??

Managed to plug the earth back into the earth tree.

Still nothing happening, there is another plug that is just laying about down the back, number 3..

Could the non starting issue be something to do with the key reader around the ignition barrel?

Checked earths in the bay and they seem to have oxidised. However I put a jump lead from battery to block to bypass the oxidised cables but still nothing.

Is there anything else that is worth checking?

How many keys do you have?

I have one key on both my vrs that don't work with the key reader. Maybe you could try the other key if you've got 2.

I'm wondering if this could be an ignition switch fault. My green vr has an issue where I have to physically push the key into the barrel whilst turning to start the car, if I don't turn the ignition that way, the car won't start.

Oh good, nice one for trying both keys. Its a trial and error with the ignition switch, it's also a steering column out to change it apparently.

Have you had the steering column plastics off to see if any wiring from the alarm has been spliced in?

Do you get any ignition lights up before attempting to start the car?

Yeah I've read up something about a clamp you need to undo to get the steering column out. Something I can look further into.

Ive not taken the plastics around the steering column off but that's something that I will look at doing tomorrow at some point.

Whoever wired up the cobra alarm spliced into a hell of a lot of cables next to the fuse box so it wouldn't surprise me if they spliced into something else to.

So when I put he key into the ignition, switch to on I get, oil light, battery light, I believe the coolant/temp light.. Also where the mileage should be I get IN 01 which I believe to be a service interval code.

Yes, that's a service code for sure.

Do you think it could be the shit up earths causing any bother? Perhaps might pay you to clean them up whilst you're improving things.

My Clifford is wired via the birdsnest inside the steering column, I've had that wiring bypassed as its to do with the Clifford immobiliser, which in a roundabout way is how I found my ignition switch fault.

So went to the car this morning, but the pos cable back on the battery and it fired up twice..

Turnt off and tried restarting and nothing again..

I'm thinking it's definitely the ignition switch which is kaput!

Instead if going through the ball ache process of trying to remove the ignition switch I thought about installing a push to start button.

Any thoughts on this?

I will still use the key to turn the ignition to on as that's not an issue.

Any ideas or tips on how to install a button?

Definitely ignition switch,

I have just "hot wired" the car and starts 1st time every time. Not bad for a car that's been sat there for 18 months and not moved an inch!

I still have to have the key in the ignition in the on position, I know it's not ideal however I managed to drive it home so I'm winning so far! It will do until I manage to sort the ignition switch out.
