v5 gearbox conversion

Recommended Posts

seen as my vr6 gearbox has crapped out for the second time im looking to upgrade and go the v5 conversion.

ive done a bit of research and i will need:

v5 gearbox (assuming any gearbox code will work??)

100mm bolt in driveshaft flanges from a mk4 tdi

mk4 gear linkage (will any mk4 5 speed linkage work or does it need to be v5)

to make it worth while i was going to put in a tdi 5th gear as well to keep revs down when cruising (which one will i need mk3? mk4? or just any tdI)

Can anyone help me out and confirm my information and fill me in on the gray areas

much appreciated :)

Ive done this to mine in March of this year..

You just need the V5 02J box and diesel cups..  thats it..

Cups I got of the early diesel mk4 box that I got 5th gear from.

Basically, I got a V5 box DZL code and can't for the life of me find the diesel box code I used, but they are all online via google easy enough.. I have the code I used on the old box in my workshop, when I did it out will let you know..  Im not happy with my 5th, as I chose the lesser of the 2 popular ones, so even though I have great take of in low gears, I haven't actually gained anything from the normal VR box up top with the choice of 5th I used... in fact my VR topped out at 135 (on gps) when it was doing 145+ before...

but without the 5th gear I would be screaming the life out the car at 70mph so cant really grumble..

the choices are 0.756 and 0.714  (something like that)  which are the 2 popular 5th gears.

Dont know how mechanically minded you are, but I done my 5th gear myself using guides online. you will need a 2 leg pulley (£10 ebay job is fine) as 3 leg pullers dont fit in end of box, found this out the hard way after buying 2 3 leg pullers haha..

I took the 5th out of the diesel box first as my practice run, incase anything went wrong.. which it did, I dropped one of the tiny pins into the box

so when I took end of the V5 box I stuffed the whole end with clothe to make sure  :D..

The V5 box how it looked when I got it, to what it looked like afterwards from some serious elbow grease... Petrol, wire brush, wire wheel on drill and screw driver to get all the hard stuff off then washed it with fairy liquid, airline blower then panel wipe and some VHT silver paint..

All that because I am too lazy to get sand for the shot blaster I have..

V5 box is a straight bolt on conversion without 5th.. clutch, everything is the same..

Having mine back out this weekend to put in a lightened flywheel and new clutch as I left the new clutch release bearing out like a bell end when I fitted the box, so rattles like hell.. So though I might as well do the clutch and flywheel while everything is out...

Good luck.
