So I dropped the oil sump and look what I've found...

My first thought was the crank shaft seal, it has a spring on the back like that, looks like the timing chains might of got hold of it.

 

On closer inspection this looks to be the case. I replaced the seal last year when I did the timing chains, the seal doesn't appear to be leaking though. Wish I'd known before I put the gearbox back on!
