AC Cobra Replica VR6T

Recommended Posts

Hi all

A while back I bought a 1992 MK3 VR6 Golf (J350 ETV), had a dead engine, stripped engine, re-bore, new Pistons, shells, rings, head skimmed, spent lots on it, great car in excellent condition - nevertheless, sold the car now

The car came with a spare engine which I knew nothing about...., I've since converted it to OBD2 (cam sensor and cover, coilpack, inlet, etc)

Bought a loom, ECU, immobiliser, clocks, and..... It runs !

I was going to put this engine in a kit car or something (wanted to build one for years !

So..., first thing I bought was a starter, adapter ring and dual mass flywheel from a Passat 2.3 V5

(The vr5 and vr6 have the same gearbox mounting faces and same crankshaft bolt pattern, bolts are longer but available - M10x1x70, passat uses an adapter plate to allow a longitudinal box to be fitted)

Recently bought a gearbox from a bent A4 B7 1.8T Quattro (nothing special), plan to lock the torsen center diff and .....

Yesterday I aquired the front and rear suspension complete units with diff, propshaft, driveshafts and brakes from a 2008 B8 S5 cheap !

On the way with my big trailer I collected a shell for a replica AC Cobra, has the same track width as an S5 which is handy !

Popped the front driveshafts out (left the outer ends in the hub to keep the bearings together), undone the lower strut clamp and with the help of the grinder dropped the strut/shock/spring down about 150mm so it all sits about the right height under the front of the cobra shell ;).

With all the parts laid out in my garage another handy touch is the rear propshaft, it will need to be 700mm, which happens to be the same length as a Q7 front propshaft aha !

It's all coming together, I will be using as many VAG group parts as possible and will keep you all posted !

For now - video of engine running -

Will add pictures etc when I work that part out !

Cheers

Sam Cleveland

Hello again all !

Sorry for the delay in replying...., been very busy with work, chassis building, writing off my nice shiny 2010 3.0T A6..., buying an even nicer shiny 2010 S6..., sorting out a few issues with that, house buying etc etc !!

However !, the chassis is coming together very well..., the front and rear sub assemblies from a 2008 S5 are attached, I had the propshaft in the lathe the other day and that is mocked up, the boost pipwwork parts and exhaust are all on the way to completion.

The inlet and exhaust manifolds, turbo, gearbox adapter plate from a Passat 2.3V5 (same bell housing pattern as the VR6), Passat 2.3V5 Flywheel and clutch are all mounted and in place for mocking up purposes !

And today was a momentus occasion !, the first engine mount was created !, there are 4 x M10 bolt holes on the right side (rear right in normal golf installation) of the engine which I picked up on, bought the metalwork around above the main pulley where it sits on top of a rather large rubber mount to a cross member between the suspension legs.

Torsional rigidity of the engine to the chassis will be obtained by using 2 more rubber mounts either side of the gearbox and possibly another mount on either the right side of the engine, extended out as far as possible or up above the current mount to another crossmember in the chassis....

Here are a few vague pics ! - chassis has changed very slightly since these pictures, will update with new pictures tomorrow once I have had a bit of a tidy up.... Or not !

All the best, Sam

hi

i am thinking about a similar project to build a kit car (Caterham 7) with a vr6 and 01A gearbox. can you let me know how you disabled the front wheel drive from the gearbox?

great thread, has there been any more process, any new pics?

cheers

Hiya Fuzzwaldo

Awesome - always like to hear of a vr6 heading into another vehicle !

Mine was originally destined for a speedboat !

As for the gearbox !, I haven't fully removed the front drive from the gearbox as yet - however, it is very easy to do.

For now I have removed the rear section of the gearbox (the rearmost ring of bolts around the casing), this's allows you to slide back the rear section of the box, inside you will see the Center Torsen type diff, like I say this is only temporary but I have welded the front/rear pinion gears together so all of the drive at the moment is still transferred through the worm type pinion gear teeth to the output shaft gears.

When the car is all built up and it's time to strip down for painting and final build up etc I plan to remove the torsen, take it to a local engineering company who will machine a blank unit for me and broach the input shaft splines and the rear output shaft splines into the blank - should have an engineered drawing of the part too so I shall circulate that once available - eeeek !!

This will then allow me to remove the front diff and the driveshaft to it (if the front prop shaft doesn't support the intermediate shaft inside the gearbox) !

I can then machine some plugs for the front output shaft seal holes with a thread in for a hose fitting to allow me to circulate and cool the gearbox oil.

The chassis has come a long long way since the photos, I cut a lot of it away and re-designed a large portion, I haven't had a chance to get much done or take any progress photos for a while as I have been doing lots of work to our house..... And building a garage so I can move all of the various projects from my parents place ;)

Also did an engine rebuild on a cheap Bora I bought on eBay recently - of course, that has a VR in it too ;)

Will get some cobra related pics up as soon as I can !

hi

thanks for the info, i have been looking into gearbox options and all the 01a boxes have seen look very expensive. can you let me know what code you are using.

my plan is to use a sierra diff at the back and have a custom prop made,

i don't think i will be starting this for a couple of years but i am looking to start collecting all the bits i need.

have you made anymore progress

cheers
