I'm looking to build a track day mk3 and need to know what's best and what's a waste of time.

So far I've got mk4 rear brakes, 312mm front brakes, koni coilovers but I've read I need to change the spring rating to 430 front and 320 rear is that right? Also I've read not to change the anti roll bars as the standard ones are fine?

I'm running Enkei wheels which weigh 7.3kg each, these are the lightest I can find, without spending stupid money.

The interior is stripped out and will have a cage welded in, dash, bucket seats and perspex windows fitted.

I'm not sure to do with the engine tuning wise as I'd like to do the odd quarter mile run but don't big bhp and make the car handle badly on the track so I was thinking of a stage 1 charger?

I know I need to get a oil cooler and swirl pot but what other parts are needed?

Thanks for any help in advance

I currently run a MK4 V6 4Motion, the modifications to date are as follows;

Anti Roll Bars, changed for Eibach R32 bars 26mm & 22m iirc

Suspension, swapped the standard for GAZ GHA coil overs, these have adjustable damping and are good value at £550

Brakes, I kept the stock rear discs and use Pagid pads, up front I have Brembo callipers off a Seat Leon Cupra R with Ferodo DS300 pads.

Gulf race brake fluid too RBF600

Wheels I run Team Dynamics pro race 3's 17" with Federal 595 RS-R tyres, decent all round tyre for changing conditions (get flamed now for not having 888's)

The final part of my track prep was weight loss. Seats out, carpets and sound deadening out, tar off the floor out, seat belts and brackets out, door cards and window motors out, roof lining and interior trim out, air bags gone, rear crash bar from behind the bumper gone, front crash bar gone, A/C gone, headlight washers, gone and so on, the car weighed best part of 1,800kg when I got it, now it is about 1350 with me and a full tank of fuel.

It is nowhere near the fastest car on track but it turns in well, gets the power down (all wheel drive) and puts a huge smile on my face, after all a track does not win prize money or anything else, so whatever you have you will have a great time and modify your car one bit at a time so you see/feel the difference.

If your car is a runner, ready for the track and you fancy giving it a run this weekend, there is a track day at Blyton Park, you can pay for full day, half day or even a half hour taster session. It is in conjunction with a car show organised by the Briskoda forum, my Golf will be there, you can have a ride in it if you can make it.

How are them GHA coilies. I've asked before but always good to find out after a while.

I'm gonna try the 595rsr when the tyres are shot on my track wheels

I find the GHA's very capable, they have about 36 clicks from soft to hard, I run the fronts at about 25 and the rears are on 15 to 18 clicks, anymore and it feels like the rear suspension has been removed, for what I paid for them I am very happy, they work in conjunction with Eibach anti roll bars which I am sure help stiffen everything up to the point the car will lift a wheel when cornering hard.  No strut braces as of yet either.

Federal 595 RS-R's, when they were new were not that grippy, a few laps and heat cycle through them and they improved a lot, they have now done 5 track days, are down to about 3mm and grip really well, they are wearing nice and flat too.   They do squeal though, every corner, loud too!   I will buy more when these are worn out.  888's are probably better but at twice the price they do not offer twice the performance of the Federals.

Here is some footage from our last outing at Cadwell.

I am looking for another set of pro race wheels, 1.2 or 3's for a set of wet tyres to go on. Secondhand they are going for daft money.

I pick the MK4 up on Saturday after it has been in Central VW for the turbo fitting  ;)   will probably need better tyres then too  :)
