Rotrex ? Turbo ?

Recommended Posts

I was actually going to start asking about the availability of the rotrex charger set up and where I could maybe lay my hands on one towards the end of the year, but I have seen a few threads now saying that Turbo option is now perhaps cheaper and easier to do ?

Last time I was really into this game Turbo was around double the price of a charger set up. Have things really changed that much ?

I would be looking to get around 300bhp or slightly more from whichever set up I decided on.

One thing that puts me off Turbo I prefer having the car pull all the way through the rev range rather than at the higher end of the scale. The other thing is the intercooler position. There is no way I will butcher my front bumper to accomodate one, is this a necessity ? Or can they be quite small and tucked away somewhere ?

Tried to take a peak at Stealth Racing but they don't even seem to have a web site these days to look at any packages that they might have. I am guessing they would still be the gys to go to for this sort of thing ? I hear they do drive in and drive out stuff ?

You can run a charge cooler (water-air) instead of intercooler(air-air) relocate your battery to your boot and fit the charge cooler there.

Nobody does a kit as such as everybodys needs are different big turbo takes a more time to come on boost and then BANG It hits in one big lump a smaller turbo will spool quicker but will run out of boost earlier.

Lloads of different turbos to choose from T03/T04 is relatively cheap full roller bearing turbo will cost a lot.

The inlet manifold is a matter of choice wether you want one made or off the shelf, 660cc injectors are probably the better ones to go for but you can use 440cc.

Thanks for the advice guys.

NIce to know that I don't have to butcher my bumper to go the turbo route.

Engine is currently a stock 12V OBD2.

From what I am also seeing, Turbo is looking the easier to actually find ? A rotrex seems pretty much like gold dust these days ? Not looking to do anything until the end of the year so got some time.

£1k ? Wow... Only a few years ago youwould have been looking at nearly £4k to go turbo which is why Charger was always the cheaper option. Now I see why there are so many Turbo VR's around these days as it seems pretty cheap to do so.

I have been waiting for bargains to pop up and I'm also doing all the work my self wich saves a lot of money. My car was originally mot failure cost me 300 I will be about 2.5k all in when finished that includes full respray, leather interior coilovers, exhaust, turbo conversion, obd2 swap and probably a few more things I have missed off the list.

Don't treat that as definitive by any means. £1k turbo installs will almost certainly consist of cheap chinese clone parts and / or a lot of second hand stuff.

If you want it built to last and to make good power with minimal lag, you're looking at £1300 just for a decent roller bearing turbo.

And don't forget brakes, clutches, boost controllers, mapping, plumbing parts, insurance, extra fuel etc etc. It all adds up.

That sounds a little more like I remember it :P

I certainly wouldn't buy anythng cheap that's for sure. IMO that is just asking for bigger problems and even bigger bills down the line when things inevitably go wrong...

Anyone got a rough idea of the costings of a good Turbo kit vs a good charger kit ?
