Dekerf1996 27
My charged VR is sounding a liitle sick and being on 105k looks like its the timing chains need replacing. THe engine is also breathing a little heavy from the cam breather pipe. So planning to wip the engine out, and fit new chains, guides etc, make sense to chuck on a new clutch and headgasket whilst i am there i think, enabling me to run a spacer plate to drop the compression a touch, so i can up the boost :-) Now as i will have the head off, i might as well get it a good going over, skim and new valve guides. Is there anything else thats recommended whilst this is being done and is it best being done by a machine shop that knows about VR engines or can any shop do this? Can anyone recommmend a shop around Reigate in surrey (J8 M25) to do the work
cactusjackslade 146
If its breathing heavy and high mileage might be worth going that little bit further and checking piston rings and bores for excessive wear....
Dekerf1996 27
I am going to look at the bottom end too, hopefully it's not that. I have a problem with the loom to the blue temp sensor and it thinks it has a problem, hopefully it's that, that's causing the problems, otherwise this could get expensive :-(Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Dekerf1996 27
Nobody recommend a machine shop around here to work on my VR head??
VR6Pete 1,455
Can highly recommend stealth racing but might be a bit too far for head rebuilds Club Chairman
abvsean 32
if your able to pull an engine out im sure you could sort the head yourself.
Dekerf1996 27
Well things have escalated now, got a dead bottom end too :-(I could do some of the refresh myself, but it needs skimming, so might get it all done together :-)
Sump_slammer 23
How did you get to that conclusion?
Dekerf1996 27
Well it's breathing heavy through the crankcase breatherSo took it for a compression test and1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 175. 142. 138. 172. 159. 161Leak test1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 50%. 55%. 65%. 20%. 20%. 20%And when testing it was leaking so badly it was coming back through many different point and other cylinders when doing it
paceo 22
did you ever get the engine sorted?
Dekerf1996 27
Still working on it, new Pistons in the post, should be here tomorrow.Hopefully go off to engine builders after that. I had troubles finding an engine builder that didn't have a 2-3 month wait, thoughi may still go with one of those, still haven't decided
Jimjon 28
When you get the head skimmed you should get the upper timing chain cover that bolts to the head skimmed at the same time, just in case you didn't know. Dekerf1996

Will mention it to the engineer. Thanks for that VR6Pete
